International Monetary Fund spokesperson Julie Kozack explained on Thursday, February 19, that the organization is evaluating resuming contact with Venezuela, but clarified that any progress in this regard will depend on a direct request from Caracas, the seat of government.

The IMF has begun gathering information and facts in the South American country “to determine how to proceed, whether through technical assistance or other cooperation mechanisms.”

Regarding the possibility of resuming relations with Venezuelan authorities, Kozack made it clear that this is not something that will happen immediately, as it will depend on validation by a majority vote of the organization’s member countries.

It is important to highlight that this rapprochement occurs “in a new political context,” where the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, maintains direct contact with the Donald Trump administration.
