South Korea announced the development of a new technology capable of transforming carbon dioxide (CO2) into liquid hydrocarbons such as gasoline and naphtha.

The team is led by researcher Jeong-Rang Kim of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, in collaboration with GS Engineering & Construction and Hanwha TotalEnergies.

Details indicate that this innovation “consists of a technology of catalysts and processes that allows for the direct conversion of CO2 and hydrogen into liquid fuels, without the need for complex intermediate stages.” For the first time, researchers have achieved a pilot production of 50 kilograms per day, a breakthrough that could usher in a new era in replacing petroleum derivatives and reducing industrial emissions.

This work is part of the Carbon Resource Platform Chemical project, spearheaded by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT. Plans have progressed toward the construction of South Korea’s first pilot plant for direct CO2 hydrogenation, capable of producing 50 kilograms of liquid hydrocarbons per day, with commissioning scheduled for the end of 2025. In the short term, they expect to reach over 100,000 tons annually.

Ultimately, the goal is to partially replace imported fossil resources with alternatives derived from captured carbon.

How does it improve firefighter safety?

The Autonomous Firefighting Robot is deployed preventively in high-risk scenarios where firefighters face dangers such as:

The system remotely identifies and assesses the situation, approaches the fire’s source, and extinguishes it directly, reducing human exposure to extreme conditions.

Based on the HR-SHERPA multipurpose unmanned vehicle, the robot integrates autonomous electrification, advanced remote operation, enhanced vision, and thermal management.

According to local media outlet MoneyToday on Monday, August 18, “the Financial Services Commission (FSC) will unveil the bill as part of the second phase of the country’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act.”

In this regard, Representative Park Min-kyu of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) noted that the FSC issued a report “on the policy direction for stablecoins” and the government bill is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly in October.

This legal instrument should establish “the requirements for issuance, collateral management, and internal control systems for stablecoins.”

The Asian country is also seeking to reduce dependence on dollar-pegged stablecoins by issuing a won-backed stablecoin. The idea has been in the works since 2023. The South Korean Financial Services Commission (SFC) announced that this year it will allow institutions to sell cryptocurrency donations and will instruct banks to offer more services to companies linked to the sector.

“South Korea’s top financial regulator will allow charities and universities to sell their crypto donations starting in the second half of 2025. Previously, the SFC had restricted institutions from opening accounts on crypto exchanges.”

The pilot plan includes regulations that will allow 3,500 corporations and professional investors to open real-name accounts in the first half of the year before they are allowed to sell their assets.

The regulator notes that the project represents a positive step towards the adoption of cryptocurrencies that has been restricted by the government since 2017.

The FSC also plans to authorize crypto exchanges to sell their asset holdings, including fees generated by users. The agency will maintain control of “general corporations that are not professional investors and will complete a review after the second phase of the pilot program.”

The purpose of the transactions and the origin of the funds will be verified to avoid common crimes in this sector, such as money laundering.

For this project, the FSC said it will create a working group with the Financial Supervisory Service and the Korean Federation of Banks and the Digital Asset Exchange Alliance, which together will implement the roadmap to achieve the objectives.
