Skype will stop working on May 5, Microsoft recently announced. The service has been active for 20 years.

According to sources from the parent company, the login information will be available to users of the phone and video calling platform in the free level of Microsoft Teams in the “coming days”.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Skype gained customers, which has continued until now, due to the quarantine that led people to confinement and turned the service into the contact tool between families.

The malware, once installed on the computer, focuses on the files of interest to hackers, with the aggravation that it can take screenshots and photos. This facilitates the activity of cybercriminals.

Users who are victims of this fake Skype application can lose the funds in their wallets, once those behind the imposter app steal their data. The action can be extended to crypto exchange platforms, because the malware monitors computers.

The study has revealed that the largest number of those affected are in countries with regional blocks to access applications, such as China, particularly those for cryptocurrency trading.

The specialists who carried out the study warn of the phishing threat with this fake app. However, they clarify that downloading Skype from unofficial sites is the gateway for hackers. This action, due to naivety or overconfidence, makes it easier to access the equipment.

On the Skype screen, all participants will soon be able to be seen, even if they do not have the video option activated, in which case the image established in the profile or their initials will be displayed, the user having the possibility of configuring their view in “gallery” mode, grid, or inverse.”

Another new feature is the ability to make video calls without the need to register on the platform. Additionally, Skype will have another interesting function called TwinCam. “After scanning a QR code from the mobile it will allow adding a second camera to the video call in progress.”

Changes have also been made related to the operating system, which was increased by 30 % for devices with Android version, also promising that it will be compatible with different browsers and on all types of devices.

The announced changes will reach the versions of Skype for all the platforms on which it is available, but gradually, because Microsoft has not yet announced a date for its official launch.
