Today the European Commission is presenting a proposal for a Law whereby it proposes that technological manufacturers be obliged to use a common charger for electronic devices, as indicated by an official of the entity who preferred not to reveal his name.

The idea aims to achieve a single standard that allows consumers to use universal chargers regardless of brand, as well as the same charger in new generations of products, in order to reduce the environmental and economic impact of having multiple chargers.

If the proposal is approved, the developers of the different technology companies must approve the “charging points of their devices”, which could probably coincide in “USB type C charging points”. They will also have to ensure that the software and its protocols for fast charging can work on different brands and terminals.

Unification by 2024

The law would come into force next year and the countries that make up the European Commission will have one year to adapt it to their national legislation. Once this phase has been passed in each country, manufacturers would have one year to execute it. Therefore, the new law would be in force possibly by mid-2024, the year in which all manufacturers have to launch their new phones and other devices with a single standard.

According to what is expressed in the proposal, the measure would not only affect cell phones, it would also impact “tablets, headphones, cameras and speakers. However, these rules will not apply to e-books or wireless chargers.”

On the other hand, the approval of this law will have a significant impact on the Apple company, which has taken steps to “stop the European Union’s attempts to standardize chargers”, using as a pretext the difficulties that the universality of charging points. However, the official who provided the information clarified “They will not harmonize all the chargers directly, but they will harmonize the charging points of the devices.”

Another implication that the new legislation would bring is that new devices would no longer come with the charger, because users will be able to use the old one, thus facilitating the reduction of electronic waste.
