Shakira made a deposit of 6.6 million euros before a court, responding to accusations of tax fraud in 2018. This case marks the second case opened against the artist for alleged crimes against the Spanish Treasury.

Legal sources reported that the Colombian singer handed over the aforementioned sum last August in an investigative court located in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona (Spain). While she waits for the magistrate’s summons to declare herself as under investigation in this second instance, the deposit made could allow her to benefit from a mitigating circumstance for reparation of damage in the event of being convicted again for tax fraud.

El Periódico de Catalunya announced that this mitigating circumstance was key in the agreement reached by the artist last Monday with the Prosecutor’s Office and the private accusations. This agreement prevented her from going to prison in the first trial for tax fraud in Spain, committing to pay a million-dollar fine. In said trial, Shakira accepted a fine of close to 7.8 million euros and acknowledged having defrauded the Treasury of 14.5 million between 2012 and 2014. Despite the three-year prison sentence for six tax crimes, she will not have to fulfill it thanks to the payment agreement.

It should be noted that, even before the Prosecutor’s Office filed her complaint, Shakira had already returned the 14.5 million defrauded to the Treasury, although this gesture did not stop the criminal actions taken by the public ministry.

The singer Shakira assured “having always acted in accordance with the law and under the advice of the best tax experts” after learning that the Investigating Court 2 of Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona) opened a second case against the artist for two alleged crimes against the Treasury for personal income tax and the 2018 Wealth Tax as a result of a complaint by the Prosecutor’s Office.

In a statement, her defense indicated that for now she has not received formal notification of the complaint, but rather that she was known before by the media, which in her opinion shows “the media and reputational pressure to which she is subjected.”

In the same sense, she recalled that “as is publicly known, and as the Spanish Treasury was officially notified, Shakira has been living in Miami for a few months, so she must be notified personally at her new address.”

The singer’s defense has stated that Shakira is “focused on her artistic life in Miami and is calm and confident in the favorable resolution of her tax issues.” The singer has already been tax investigated and is awaiting trial, scheduled for November 20, for allegedly defrauding 14.5 million euros from the Treasury between 2012 and 2014.

This Wednesday, January 13, it was known that the Colombian singer Shakira decided to sell her extensive catalog of songs made up of a total of 145 musical themes to the British company, Hipgnosis Songs Fund.

A statement shared by the artist herself states that “I feel honored that writing songs have given me the privilege of communicating with others, of being part of something bigger than myself. I know Hipgnosis will be a great home for my catalog and I am very happy to partner with this company”.

Investments in intellectual property

Through its social networks, the company confirmed the incorporation of Shakira’s musical repertoire, although the figure that the celebrity will receive for said agreement is still unknown. In addition, the songs of the Colombian are added to the music library of Hipgnosis that already has the works of Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Debbie Harry (Blondie), Chryssie Hynde (Pretenders), The Chainsmokers or Mark Ronson.

An information presented by Variety magazine indicated that recently the British company obtained 50% of the rights to Neil Yong’s repertoire, some 1,180 songs for about 50 million dollars.

Notably, Hipgnosis Songs Fund, a song management and music intellectual property investment company co-founded in 2018 by Nile Rodgers and Merck Mercuriadis, who at the time led figures such as Beyoncé and Elton John.
