Kosovo, a former province of Belgrade, announced a one-month transition period to eliminate the Serbian dinar as a means of payment in the north of the country.

According to the local press, the Kosovo Prime Minister, “the left-wing nationalist Albin Kurti, announced last night that during the transition the decision of the Central Bank of Kosovo (BCK) to regulate payments exclusively in euros will be implemented.”

He explained that for thirty days they will do what is necessary to ensure that the population is informed and provide the “necessary help to make this transition as light as possible.” He added that the Executive will begin information campaigns on the issue with “the sensitivity it deserves.”

The decision to eliminate the Serbian dinar as a form of payment in northern Kosovo came into effect on February 1. However, the official admitted that a transition period is required. For this reason, he indicated that it will be in a month.

According to Kurti, “the Central Bank’s regulation on cash payments does not go against the Serbian dinar.” In fact, payments to Serbs of pensions and other aid from Serbia in dinars will continue in the current currency, “but they must be deposited in bank accounts in Kosovo in euros.”
