As a further step towards achieving a trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, negotiators from both parties will meet in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, between September 4 and 6.

The agreement has been delayed, among other reasons, “due to European concerns about environmental safeguards and complaints from the South American trading bloc that these issues are driven by protectionism.”

The Foreign Ministers of the bloc countries will meet in Brasilia, although confirmation is expected from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

The themes for this meeting remain the same: “European protection of its food products and Brazilian opposition to an EU anti-deforestation law that will come into force next year and could affect the country’s exports,” among others.

It is important to highlight that the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, committed to concluding the agreement before the end of the year. “At this stage, the EU is the main force behind the new push to conclude the agreement, which will open markets for European companies,” said international relations academic Ignacio Bartesaghi of the Catholic University of Uruguay.
