Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday, February 19, for insurrection related to the martial law he imposed, which prevented Parliament from functioning normally.

The Seoul Central District Court broadcast live the sentencing of the former president, referring to his attempt to impose martial law in December 2014, “a measure that lasted six hours and triggered a political crisis in one of the world’s most stable democracies. The former president also faces other legal proceedings and has appealed previous rulings.”

Authorities addressed the prosecution’s earlier request for the death penalty, noting that in the country, insurrection is punishable by life imprisonment. They also clarified that Yoo faces eight legal proceedings that must be completed within two years.
