The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the nominations for the Oscars have been postponed until January 23rd as a sign of respect and consideration for the victims of the wildfires that are ravaging California and have destroyed hundreds of homes.

The original date for these nominations was today, January 17th. It was later suggested that it would be moved to the 19th, but they have now said it will be the 23rd.

Academy President Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer announced in a statement on Wednesday: “Due to the ongoing fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend the voting period and the nomination announcement date to allow our members additional time [to vote].”

In a Hollywood Reporter post, Kramer and at least four other members of the Academy leadership have lost their homes as a result of these fires.
