Created in 1995, E3 has been the scene of hundreds of meetings for brands as recognized in the market as PlayStation, Nintendo, Sega, Xbox, in addition to having been the channel for the dissemination of announcements such as the trailers for Metal Gear Solid 2, Half Life 2, GTA, among others.

Among the factors that have led to the definitive closure of the fair are the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, “the ability to disseminate information through various channels and the withdrawal of companies such as Nintendo or PlayStation,” according to Stanley Pierre. -Louis, president and CEO of the organizer, Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

The 2020, 2022 and 2023 E3 editions were cancelled. In addition, companies like Nintendo left the fair to organize their own events, which has been emulated by other participants who remained from the beginning.

The passion of video game lovers remained, but participation was declining due to various related factors, particularly due to measures to prevent Covid-19 infections.

The CEO of ESA concludes his farewell message in this way: “We know that the entire industry, both players and creators, is very passionate about E3. Video game developer and distributor SEGA decided to retain its most popular franchises from projects based on blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to avoid devaluing them.

SEGA’s co-director of operations, Shuji Utsumi, shared the change in vision of the Japanese multinational about the technologies called Web 3.0, after having advocated in the last couple of years for its adoption to increase the value of video games.

The company has halted plans to create its own blockhain-based games, which it framed in a project called Superjuego, and which included everything from the development of multiplatform triple-A titles with Unreal Engine 5 to cloud gaming, without ruling out its entry into the NFT market.

In fact, in 2021, it announced the sale of NFT digital content (visual art, game images and soundtrack) from its classic series video games and inspired by its current video game sagas and those it will create in the future.

Now SEGA decided to retain its most popular franchises, such as Sonic and Yakuza, to prevent third parties from using them in blockchain projects, devaluing their content, as the manager has shared with Bloomberg. It does seem that it will allow characters from minor franchises, such as Three Kingdoms and Virtua Fighter, to create NFTs for the time being.

“We are looking into whether this technology is really going to take off in this industry,” Utsumi said. Although they have not fully disengaged from its adoption, they will wait until Web 3.0 technology is somewhat more mature.

Japanese video game studio SEGA and Microsoft announced a strategic alliance to explore new ways to develop large-scale titles using the tools of the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

The alliance between both companies, announced this week as part of SEGA’s Super Games strategy, contemplates the creation of a “new generation development environment” for video games with online functions that use the franchises of the Japanese studio, as assured the entertainment company through a statement.

Using the Azure cloud platform, SEGA’s goal is to “streamline development processes and continue to deliver high-quality experiences to gamers” using Microsoft technologies.

The agreement between both companies contemplates “building new technological evolutions” focused on areas such as network infrastructure and communication tools for online services.

In addition, the use of “a next generation development platform”, as described by SEGA, will allow the studio to adapt to remote work and possible infrastructure changes in the future.

“Together we will reimagine how games are created, hosted and operated, with the goal of adding more value to players and SEGA in equal measure,” said Sarah Bond, corporate vice president of Microsoft Corporation.
