A bug in Android is showing in the Privacy panel that the WhatsApp application unnecessarily accessed the mobile device’s microphone, a fact that Google is already investigating.

The Twitter engineer Foad Dabiri warned of a series of unnecessary accesses of the WhatsApp app to the microphone of his Pixel smartphone, at dawn and for several minutes each time, as he has shared through the social network.

WhatsApp suggested that it is a bug present in Android, not in its messaging application, which “attributes erroneous information in its privacy panel”, and for this reason they have contacted Google to solve it.

Google, for its part, confirmed that it is working with WhatsApp to solve this problem, as stated in the statement sent by a spokesperson to Engadget. The portal specialized in the news of WahtsApp WABetainfo already explained at the beginning of April that the messaging ‘app’ was showing “false positives” of accesses to the smartphone’s microphone.

TikTok denied the alleged security breach by which a hacker would have accessed the account records of billions of its users and the internal source code of the video brechs platform.

On September 3, the user AgainstTheWest of the hacker forum Breach Forums claimed to have in his possession data obtained from TikTok and WeChat, the app developed by Tencent, as a result of a security breach.

As evidence, he accompanied his publication with some screenshots and a video that warned about the alleged leak of data from both platforms.

In the case of TikTok, the user claimed to have more than 2,000 million user records, including payment information, which reached 790GB, although he later indicated that the file occupied a total of 6.7TB.

Twitter was the victim of a cyberattack that led to the leaking of the data of 5.4 million users due to a security breach discovered earlier this year.

Cybersecurity platform HackerOne published a report in February informing Twitter that by exploiting this bug, attackers were able to collect user data.

“This vulnerability allows any user without any authentication to obtain a Twitter ID of any other user by sending a phone number or email, despite the fact that it prohibited the action from the Privacy Settings,” it can be read in this report.

This report also indicates that this bug is specific to the Android version of Twitter and that it was discovered during the process of verifying the duplication of a social network account.

Also, HackerOne notes that it is “a serious threat” that can be exploited by “any attacker with a basic knowledge of scripting and coding“, capable of creating a database that can be sold or used for advertising purposes.

A HackerOne user known as “zhirinovskiy” reported this issue to Twitter, and the company not only verified that it was a vulnerability in their system, but also rewarded this user a total of $5,040 for flagging it.

However, from RestorePrivacy they indicate that the cyberattackers took advantage of this failure to collect information from 5.4 million users of the social network and sell it through the hacking forum Breached Forums.
