Neuralink performed a new brain chip implant in a second patient, according to Elon Musk, owner of the startup, who added that by the end of this year it will carry out eight additional trials.

According to information about this new implant, the Musk-owned company “is currently testing its brain chip implants, which are designed to help people with spinal cord injuries regain some autonomy.”

The first implant was carried out at the end of January 2024 in patient Noland Arbaugh, a 29-year-old quadriplegic.

Neuralink obtained authorization for the second implant in May, after making some modifications to the process to locate the implant threads, estimating that it would be “eight millimeters into the patient’s motor cortex, compared to the three to five millimeters used for the first Neuralink patient.”

This second implant, according to Musk, consists of 400 electrodes that are already showing signals. His company is awaiting regulatory approval for eight more trials by the end of the year.
