A new regulation that came into effect in the European Union on Tuesday, July 7, mandates the installation of a driver monitoring infrared camera in all new cars and light commercial vehicles registered in the 27 member states.

Although criticisms have arisen regarding privacy violations, “the requirement is part of the final phase of the General Safety Regulation (Regulation 2019/2144), a regulatory update that began to be implemented gradually from 2022 and now extends its requirements to all new vehicles sold within the bloc,” as detailed by Cryptopolitan.

In any case, the authorities’ priority is the safety of both the driver and occupants of the vehicle, as well as pedestrians. In this regard, the “European Commission maintains that this set of measures will save more than 25,000 lives and prevent around 140,000 serious injuries between 2025 and 2038.”

In practice, the infrared camera will allow for the continuous analysis of parameters such as gaze direction, blink rate, yawning, and other indicators associated with driver distraction or fatigue, with image processing occurring within the vehicle. This does not involve video storage or biometric identification of the driver.

The regulation is part of a broader package of safety measures for all new cars sold in the European Union. The main requirements are:

• Automatic emergency braking capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists.
• Driver distraction monitoring system using an infrared camera.
• Improvements to the cabin design to widen the driver’s field of vision.
• Grip tests performed with worn tires instead of new ones.
• Safety glass with greater capacity to reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision.

China is solving one of the safety challenges in monitoring high-voltage cables with snake-like robots that move easily along the power lines.

Inspecting high-voltage power lines is now more efficient thanks to robots that can move directly over the cables in the city of Kunming, in China’s Yunnan province.

The first large-scale trials of these devices are being conducted in the area. “Developed by the Guandu District power supply office, the robots coil around the power lines and move along them while inspecting the condition of the infrastructure using integrated cameras and sensors.”

The devices’ mission is to “detect damaged cables, worn components, or thermal anomalies that could lead to breakdowns or power outages.” They operate using energy drawn directly from the lines they inspect, allowing them to “operate for extended periods without recharging and maintain virtually continuous monitoring.”

Their efficiency in testing stems from their articulated, snake-like design, which enables them to navigate around obstacles in the power lines, such as insulators or splices.

It is important to note that in the country, in addition to these snake robots, “electrical companies are also incorporating robot dogs, drones, and intelligent monitoring systems to strengthen grid reliability and reduce the risks associated with maintenance tasks.”

OpenAI revealed its advancements in online safety, particularly for children and teenagers, through a new system that will allow the ChatGPT chatbot to identify the user and adapt the content to their age.

In this regard, the system is expected to block content that is not suitable for minors, “improving the safety of all users, specifically, reinforcing the protection of teenagers with effective tools, such as the recently announced parental controls.”

According to OpenAI, it is developing “a system that will be able to identify whether a person is over or under 18 years old, so that it will adapt the ChatGPT experience based on their age and needs, automatically changing the way the chatbot responds to a 15-year-old teenager or an adult.”

In this sense, if the user is identified as under 18 years old, “they will be automatically directed to a ChatGPT experience with age-appropriate policies. This means that actions will be taken, including blocking explicit sexual content, and in exceptional cases of extreme distress, the possible intervention of law enforcement to ensure safety.”

It has also been detailed that if the user’s identification is questionable or incomplete, the system will still redirect them to the experience for users under 18.
