The activity of the alternative group of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) was analyzed this Wednesday in a meeting in Tehran, Iran, between Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy, Mehdi Safari, and the Deputy Minister of Russian Foreign Affairs, Sergey Ryabkov.

The officials focused on the actions that the founding members of this group have been carrying out, as well as those who have been admitted this year, and their role facing 2024.

The agenda between the representatives of Russia and Iran included areas the two sides discussed such as “economy and trade, energy, agriculture, science and technology, environment, sports and culture,” according to a statement.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy highlighted that his country is making efforts to play a leading role in the activities of the BRICS, which is “effective and constructive.”

Russia, for its part, strengthens its participation in the group, since in October 2024 it will assume the presidency, seeking to strengthen de-dollarization and the strengthening of emerging economies.

As you may remember, during the 15th BRICS Summit that took place in August in South Africa, the new countries that will be part of the group were announced: Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The decision will come into effect on January 1, 2024.
