With the approval of 802.11bf as a WiFi standard by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), routers will go from being products dedicated to creating communication networks to becoming a motion detector.

Despite the fact that the innovative invention has been the subject of study in the home automation industry for some time, the standardization of the detection of objects and people by WiFi networks is getting closer. However, some security aspects need to be adjusted.

According to experts, WiFi detection is presented as an alternative for remote detection of movement at home from a distance, based on the same mechanisms used in wireless networks to detect environmental changes and its main use is in home security, care of older people or gesture recognition.

Despite the fact that the function has been known for some years, thanks to this research, the project undergoes an extensive evaluation for the application of standards such as: 802.11ad, 802.11ay, 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ax and 802.11be.

The research group working on the standard expects the device to hit the market in September 2024.
