Ministers participating in the European Space Agency (ESA) summit in Seville, Spain, endorsed its roadmap to ensure Europe’s autonomy and access to space, which includes a more competitive next generation of rockets and cargo vehicles capable of going to and from the space station.

The event, which was attended by the acting Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, comes at a time in which space access and exploration have changed radically and in which, they say, new solutions must be sought.

The space transportation sector around the world is changing at a rapid pace. While the US, China and Russia already have the capacity to launch humans into space, India will soon follow, ESA points out.

SpaceX, with the US government as the primary customer for human and cargo transportation to and from the International Space Station, has established itself as a market leader in commercial space transportation.

ESA admits that Europe’s independent access to space is now in a “temporary crisis.”

This weekend 34 satellites of the British operator OneWeb were launched by the Russian Soyuz rocket, to expand a constellation that will provide very high-speed Internet to the entire world.

According to the information provided by the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos), the rocket, operated by the first commercial space transport company Arianespace, it successfully took off at 2213 GMT on Saturday from the Russian Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

This launch is the fifth carried out by OneWeb in the eight months of 2021, to have an availability of 288 satellites in orbit.

The global communications company, OneWeb, plans to put into operation, by the end of 2022, a global Internet with a network of 650 satellites.

One¬Web and Arianespace for the end of last year, signed an agreement with which the European group undertakes to launch the rest of the satellites until completing the constellation they want for the project to enter into execution.

There are several projects that aim to offer the Internet worldwide, among which the billionaire Elon Musk stands out, who has his own space company Space X, which has put into orbit more than 1,500 satellites from his Starlink network.

Another similar project is being developed by the American Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, who is executing his project called Kuiper.
