Donald Trump signed this Saturday, February 1, at his Mar-a-Lago club, the order for the entry into force of the extraordinary tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, as he had promised in his electoral campaign.

Canada has reacted with a similar measure; that is, with the imposition of tariffs of 25 % on “American goods worth 30 billion Canadian dollars (about 21 billion US dollars)” starting today, Tuesday, according to an announcement by Justin Trudeau. However, a 30-day pause on tariffs was achieved while agreements are reached.

For her part, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, rejected the 25 % tariffs on Mexican exports to the United States imposed on Saturday by Donald Trump, while giving orders to implement a plan of tariff and non-tariff measures to defend Mexico’s interests. On Monday, February 3, Trump postponed the tariffs for a month while Sheinbaum promised to reinforce the border to stop fentanyl trafficking.

China has also reacted to Trump’s measure, rejecting the measures of the President of the United States on Sunday. From Beijing, the Ministry of Commerce announced that they will take the corresponding measures to protect their rights and interests. In fact, the country filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (IMC) through which it accuses Washington of violating international trade rules. 

In this context, and faced with the threat of imposing a 100 % tax on the BRICS group if they abandon the dollar, Brazil responded that there will be reciprocity regarding this measure. However, the president of the South American country, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has declared that he hopes that bilateral relations will improve.

From Europe, Germany has expressed concern about Trump’s recent tariff impositions. In this regard, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made it clear that the priority should not be focused on dividing the world with many tariff barriers.

The European Union has also spoken out on the issue, indicating that they would respond firmly to any tariffs on the region, since such impositions harm not only companies but directly workers.
