Google announced a new step to provide protection to Gmail users. The technology company announced that SMS authentication will soon be done by QR codes.

Google’s goal is to advance its cybersecurity policy to protect users from attacks through phishing and SIM swapping. “Currently, SMS are vulnerable to attacks and fraud, which has led the company to adopt more secure methods such as Passkeys and passwordless authentication.”

Regarding the QR codes that will replace SMS, the company said that users will be able to scan them “instead of receiving a six-digit code by text message. This change is part of a global trend to strengthen security in online accounts through methods such as application authenticators and physical security keys.”

Another objective of this change is, according to the company, “to reduce the impact of the rampant and global abuse of SMS”, since through this functionality users can fall into a “phishing scam and the dependence on the telephone service provider to support protection against cyber threats”.
