An international team of researchers led by Lancaster University announced the results of a study detailing the action of a new drug on the abnormal aggregation of the tau protein, one of the defining characteristics of Alzheimer’s.

The drug, presented by this team, “acts on the two main alterations that promote the aggregation of the tau protein.”

The scientists have only carried out tests on cell cultures and animal models of fruit flies. The highlight is that it inhibits peptides, “molecules formed by two or more amino acids; the latter, in turn, are the “building blocks” of which the proteins are made) called RI-AG03.”

Explained in a simpler way, the drug blocks the two regions of the tau molecule that, in people with the disease, produce the abnormal aggregation.

According to the researchers, the focus of this study points to a more specific and safe treatment, where side effects will be reduced.

The therapy with the new drug is in the initial phase of development. Researchers still need to test its effectiveness in real human beings.
