The United States has formalized the appointment of Francisco ‘Paco’ Palmieri as the new head of the diplomatic mission headed by the United States Embassy in Venezuela.

“We want to welcome Chief of Mission Francisco “Paco” Palmieri, who joins the team of the United States Embassy for Venezuela (VAU),” the Embassy posted on Twitter.

Palmieri thus replaces James Story, who officially stepped down on May 19. Palmieri will also continue to serve as Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Bogotá.

Palmieri is a diplomat directing the Mission of the Foreign Office of the United States for Venezuela, located at the Embassy of the United States in Colombia, since May 19, 2023. He is also the Chargé d’Affaires ‘ad interim’ of the North American Embassy for Colombia.

He is a diplomat with 36 years of experience in the area. He has held management positions in the State Department and has extensive experience in relations with the Western Hemisphere.

He was Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs from January 2017 to November 2018 and managed the United States’ participation in the 2018 Summit of the Americas in Peru.

He has also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central America and the Caribbean, and Director of the Office of Policy Planning and Coordination of the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs.

He has worked with secretaries James Baker, Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry in key team roles as a member of the Executive Secretary.
