Alfredo Padilla, director of the Association of Entrepreneurs and Microentrepreneurs of Venezuela (Atraem), said that 7 million Venezuelans work independently or on their own. The figure is higher than those employed in the sector and in the private sector.

According to Padilla, independent work and “informal enterprises” have become the most important source of popular private economy.

In the country there are “300,000 micro-enterprises, tens of thousands of market concessionaires and their employees, tens of thousands of open-air markets, indoor commerce and services in residential complexes and in the neighborhood.”

In addition to the rental of commercial premises or annexes that offer “hairdressing and beauty services, transportation, teachers and self-employed professionals, health assistants, entertainment, recreation, gastronomy, artisans, vendors in public spaces and fairs,” explained the director of Atraem.

On the other hand, Padilla explained that in Venezuelan laws, as well as in the recommendations of the International Labor Organization (ILO), there are legal provisions that recognize the “rights of association and social security of these workers.”
