Peru wakes up this Friday, October 10, with a new interim president, José Jeri, at the head of the Peruvian Congress, after President Dina Boluarte was removed from office by a large majority in a night session that she did not attend.

The decision was made with 122 votes in favor out of a total of 130, and was later approved by Congress, along with the “four motions that ended Boluarte’s term, which began in December 2022 after the fall of Pedro Castillo. Her departure closes a cycle of two years and ten months of institutional turbulence, marked by protests, a crisis of legitimacy, and fragile governance,” local media reported.

According to CNN en Español, Boluarte’s dismissal comes “amid criticism from citizens and some protests over the country’s insecurity, as well as the now-former president’s low popularity. A Datum International poll indicates that her disapproval rating is 93%.”

In response to the announcement, the now-former president defended her administration, stating that she had always fought for her country, for Peruvian citizens, for the nation’s growth, and for “a government that operates without corruption, as we have been doing.”
