On the morning of this Wednesday, April 3, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake shook the coasts of Taiwan. Preliminary reports outlined a dozen deaths, thousands of people affected by the collapse of infrastructure, interruption of electrical service, as well as transportation and communications.

This earthquake is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years, according to some analysts. Images on Taiwanese television showed the collapse of buildings in Hualien, near the epicenter of the earthquake.

According to information from the United States Geological Survey, the telluric event occurred at a depth of about 35 kilometers above the surface.

Given the magnitude of the earthquake, Japan and the Philippines issued a tsunami alert and evacuated coastal areas due to the possibility of waves up to three meters high.
