Those responsible for Tourism in the cities of “Andorra la Vella, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Lima, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo” met with the purpose of analyzing, sharing and designing a strategic document that systematizes the vision of Ibero-American tourism in the future, and it is planned to launch it next July.

Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, indicated that the organization has the mission of promoting tourism as a factor of sustainable development of the different destinations.

“Innovation and sustainability mark our roadmap. We work so that a better tourism is reflected in the well-being and economy of local communities and their visitors”, he pointed out.

Ibero-American strategy for tourism

The EIT is an economic recovery instrument that local governments use to favor the strengthening and development of tourism in the different metropolises of the Ibero-American cities that comprise it, taking innovation and sustainability as fundamental variables.

Based on these principles, the representatives of the Ibero-American Capital Cities are preparing a specialized technical document on the policies and practices that the metropolis must implement to ensure that the tourism sector is “responsible, intelligent, sustainable, accessible and safe”.

The cities that participate in the meeting focused their priorities on decision-making, taking into consideration the historical data provided by visitors, as well as promoting the development of tourist experiences in technology and supporting the different tourist enterprises.

Additionally, they consider it of great importance to develop the various smart urban tourist destinations taking into account “five pillars: governance, innovation, technology, accessibility and sustainability.”

The International Union of Public Transport (UITP) was also present at the meeting, an organization that, together with the UNWTO, UCLG and the eight Ibero-American cities, formed part of the Work Commission.
