Venezuelan Fisheries Minister Juan Carlos Loyo announced on Thursday, August 14, that reforms to the legal regulation of inland fishing in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs will begin within 15 days.

He emphasized that the objective of this reorganization is, among other things, to quantify the volume of fishing in ports, facilitate exports by simplifying legal procedures for traders, and promote free trade nationwide.

“The reform also includes the creation of detailed records of all catches made in all fishing ports, in order to quantify fishing volumes and species types,” Loyo said.

The authorities “estimate that this fishing modality will be formalized and integrated into the national economy” through these approaches. Furthermore, he said that “operational strategies will be created, and national companies will be incorporated, working together with the fishermen so that everything is now done legally and formally.”

The process includes meetings with inland fishermen from the state of Apure, the westernmost state in the country, with “a production capacity of approximately 20,000 tons of fish and which, due to its geographical location and proximity to Colombia, has advantages for exporting the product to the neighboring country.”
