According to this union, the proposal recently presented by Claudia Sheinbaum’s government will help reduce the job insecurity of more than 658,000 digital platform employees.

Sergio Guerrero, UNTA’s general secretary, stressed that the reform of the Federal Labor Law will allow progress towards social coverage for workers and the recognition of their labor rights, social security, and the implementation of legislative improvements, among other benefits.

This type of work is a reality in other countries, where those who work as delivery people or make transfers await their formal inclusion in the laws to obtain the corresponding benefits and protection.

According to the reform called “Pension Fund for Wellbeing,” AMLO seeks to “improve the retirements of thousands of people.”

The Upper House approved a public fund for 40,000 million pesos (about 2,300 million dollars) to improve the retirements of thousands of workers. It had the majority of the ruling party and its allies.

While senators discuss different points of the reform, full approval is expected to occur soon and then be signed into law by the president.

The “Pension Fund for Wellbeing” will receive “resources that have not been claimed by people over 70 years of age from private retirement fund administrators, which in Mexico are known as Afores.”

The money will serve to benefit between 26 and 28 million people by ensuring “a retirement equivalent to their last salary, as long as it does not exceed the average monthly salary in Mexico, which in 2024 is 16,777 pesos (about $974).”

Sánchez pointed out: “We must modernize our European electricity regulatory framework because, if not, we will jeopardize the entire green transition.” He also stressed that the “consequences” of the current emissions trading system are already affecting families and industries.

He also stressed that “it makes no sense that we are paying gas prices when we have energies as competitive as renewables and that the emissions trading market is totally altered (…). It is necessary to be more ambitious on a European scale”.

Reforms to the electrical system

President Sánchez has wondered why it is “difficult” for the public authorities to intervene in the energy markets. “Instead, when the financial market is broken, politicians and economists advocate intervention,” he added.

In addition, he argued that politicians need to continue to have the support of society, so it is necessary for everyone to see the advantages of the green transition. For this, he has urged those responsible to avoid measures that could affect those segments of the population that are suffering the most from the consequences of the pandemic or the war.

On his side, the vice president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, has criticized the fact that energy companies “are pocketing enormous extraordinary profits while citizens suffer because they cannot pay their electricity bills.”

Thus, Timmermans has also considered it necessary to introduce reforms in the European electricity system, but has indicated that it is not something that can be resolved “overnight”.

The law is focused on “application store operators with dominant positions in the market”, and parliamentarians, since mid-2020, have been pushing “the question of the structure of commission charges.”

If it becomes law, developers will have different options and will be able to select which independent payment systems they want to use.

Worldwide, both Google and Apple have received criticism and harsh criticism for demanding that developers use the payment systems of their companies, which charge up to 30 % commission for each of the purchases made.

Kwon Se-hwa, CEO of the Korea Internet Corporation Association, a non-profit group representing Korean technology companies, noted in the case of game applications, “Google has forced application developers to use its own payment system (…) and wants to extend its policy to other applications such as music or cartoons.”

Other nations are also managing legal aspects that allow them to put limits on the world’s technology companies, this is how in 2020 the European Union proposed the Digital Markets Law, which also aims to reduce the “commissions of the application stores”. However, some lawmakers want to “toughen it up to specifically target America’s tech giants.”

In the United States, three bipartisan deputies presented a project “that would stop the application stores of companies that, according to them, exercise too much control of the market, including Apple and Google.”

Among the reforms are the extension of the presidential term, the creation of a new body that will supplant the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) and the incorporation of an eventual digital currency.

This was reported by the vice president of that nation, Félix Ulloa, who explained: “Virtual currencies are coming and that if our legislation is not prepared we will be relegated. The possibility of non-specific, non-physical currencies is contemplated in monetary policy.”

Ulloa was emphatic in stating that the new constitution will be “approved and a minute will be issued by the committee, which will include the dissenting votes of those who disagree in some aspects.” In the course of the next few days, the presentation will be made to the nation’s diplomatic corps and NGOs, then to universities and finally to organizations.

The country bets on bitcoin

The new legislative document establishesthat the reforms to the rest of the laws for their adaptation to the new legislative regime must be carried out within a period of 2 years, after being ratified in both assemblies.

As it will be recalled, the policies established in economic matters by the government of Nayib Bukele, especially those concerning the financial area and the decision to assume Bitcoin as the national currency have provoked mixed reactions both in the national territory and outside its borders.

The agency Moody’s highlighted that decisions such as the Bitcoin Law, the dismissal of magistrates and their separation from the International commission against impunity undermine confidence in the government of Nayib Bukele, reducing its ability to obtain loans from international financial institutions.

However, Bank of America, in its economic outlook report, approves the decision to adopt Bitcoin. It highlights that remittances constitute 24 % of the country’s GDP and with Bitcoin costs can be reduced, in addition to being widely used in cross-border transactions, allowing citizens to maximize their dollars.
