The United Nations Organization issued a recent report, in which the population that in 2022 received some type of humanitarian aid, coordinated through this organization, the Red Cross and national organizations, is estimated at 2.8 million Venezuelans.

In Venezuela, aid is coordinated through various humanitarian entities and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA. The UN indicates in its report that last year assistance covered “53.8 % of the goal set by the UN, of 5,200,000.”

The most vulnerable, included in this humanitarian aid, were “adults between 18 and 59 years of age, 941,000 children and adolescents and 646,000 adults over 60 years of age,” according to OCHA.

Among the most critical sectors is the supply of drinking water, medicines, sanitation and hygiene, as well as those related to food and nutritional supplements for the population.

The deliveries are part of the “Humanitarian Response Plan that the UN approved last year, materialized in 329 of the 335 municipalities in the country.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, is working on a project based on blockchain technology to deliver tokenized aid to populations in conflict zones.

According to information provided by The Block, the Red Cross project is aimed at developing a “stable utility token” that is linked to the price of an asset, similar to what is currently known as a stablecoin, to make easier and more immediate delivery of charitable aid.

The project is carried out in partnership between the ICRC and Partisia. So far, the proceeds amount to 55 million dollars thanks to the sale of its native tokens, as reported by Kurt Nielsen, CEO of blockchain.

With this tokenized aid project, the charity founded in Switzerland in 1863 would reach those most in need almost immediately. Currently, aid is given in cash and vouchers. Thanks to the new initiative, a solution will be created that “reaches the affected people through tokens, where the necessary Internet and smartphone infrastructure exists.”

Blockchain technology will facilitate the delivery of aid and, on the other hand, the Red Cross will achieve better and greater control “over the input and output flow”, with security, data protection, public and private smart contracts, among other features.

For the president of the Red Cross and the IFRC, Francisco Rocca, “it is an invention that will change the life and quality of home and remote medical care for many citizens who experience health problems and vulnerable people suffering from chronic diseases, guaranteeing accessibility to care services and the support of our national and international network.”

For its part, the telecommunications provider considers that 5G technology is the key to improving people’s quality of life, which is why it will begin the YouCare 5G trials at the Center for Innovation and Research, located in L’Aquila, Italy.
