The United States and El Salvador signed an important Reciprocal Trade Agreement that will allow the two countries to focus on key aspects of their economic relations, such as exports, tariffs, and security, among others.

The objective is to consolidate the bilateral economic relationship by focusing on the discussion of “non-tariff barriers, including simplifying regulatory requirements and authorizations for U.S. exports, such as the acceptance of vehicles and auto parts manufactured according to U.S. motor vehicle safety and emissions standards, and the acceptance of FDA certifications and prior marketing authorizations for medical devices and pharmaceuticals.”

The Central American nation also anticipates the elimination of non-tariff barriers to “U.S. agricultural products in its market,” ensuring that U.S. agricultural exporters are not restricted by the mere use of certain terms related to cheese and meat.

For its part, the U.S. will eliminate reciprocal tariffs on certain Salvadoran exports, such as products not grown or extracted in the U.S., and textiles and apparel originating from the previous trade agreement, CAFTA-DR.
