The report reveals how attackers continue to improve the efficiency and scalability of their operations, as, instead of relying on entirely new methods and tools, they are rapidly adapting established techniques to new platforms, technologies, and user behaviors.

Key findings from the report

ClickFix — a social engineering technique that leverages fake error messages—has expanded into AI-themed help pages, browser extensions, and cloud authentication scenarios.

QR code phishing — also known as “quishing”—has reached record levels in ESET telemetry.

ESET analyzed nearly 900,000 AI skills — small functional components used by AI agents—and identified tens of thousands of suspicious instances and thousands of malicious ones. AI is also beginning to appear within malware.

Ransomware showed no signs of slowing down, with its continued use of “EDR killers”—tools designed to disable security software during attacks.

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role. During the first half of 2026, ESET analyzed nearly 900,000 AI skills — small functional components used by AI agents — and identified 25,000 suspicious instances and more than 3,000 outright malicious instances. The number of AI skills within this emerging ecosystem is growing, expanding the attack surface.

AI is also beginning to appear within malware itself. Shortly after the emergence of the first AI-powered ransomware in 2025, the ESET research team identified PromptSpy, the first known Android malware to use generative AI in its execution flow. This malware leverages AI—specifically Google’s Gemini—to interpret user interface elements and adapt to different devices and environments without relying on hardcoded behaviors.

“Instead of resorting to entirely new methods and tools, attackers are rapidly adapting established techniques to new platforms, technologies, and user behaviors.” “The number of AI capabilities within this new ecosystem is growing rapidly right now, further expanding the attack surface,” says Jiří Kropáč, Director of ESET’s Threat Prevention Labs. “On the other hand, PromptSpy illustrates the potential for greater flexibility in future threats, although the abuse protection measures included in large language models (LLMs) are likely hindering its adoption,” Kropáč explains.

AI skills are small plugins or sets of instructions that tell an AI agent how to perform a specific task, including which services or tools to use and what data to access. The published report addresses details about malicious AI skills that use third-party hacking tools and a suspicious self-modifying skill designed to create a persistence mechanism (JSON file) and a tool for self-modification (Python code). This can lead to unpredictable agent behavior or its misuse by an attacker. Finally, there are benign but problematic skills, such as those marketed as security scanners, which create a false sense of security but only implement basic scanning techniques—like antivirus tools from the 1990s—or simply check the reputation of hashes, URLs, and IP addresses on VirusTotal.

Unique AI skills analyzed by ESET systems (per day, average of seven)

Meanwhile, ClickFix—a social engineering technique that leverages fake error messages—has expanded beyond bogus CAPTCHA requests to encompass AI-related help pages, browser extensions, and cloud authentication scenarios. AI-fix shows how attackers exploit trust in generative AI, embedding ClickFix compromise chains into AI-generated troubleshooting content for nonexistent issues on pages that abuse the domains of AI giants. ConsentFix highlights an evolution toward token theft, combining ClickFix-style interaction with OAuth authorization abuse to hijack cloud accounts without stealing credentials, often bypassing two-factor authentication (MFA) and relying entirely on legitimate login workflows. ESET’s detections of this vector more than doubled between the second half of 2025 and the first half of 2026, indicating sustained activity and constant adaptation.

Phishing campaigns are also evolving in response to user behavior. QR code phishing—also known as “quishing”—has reached record levels in ESET telemetry, with attackers embedding malicious links in QR codes to evade inspection and redirect user interaction to mobile devices, while exploiting the implicit trust many people place in barcodes with square patterns. Approximately 11 % of all phishing emails detected in the first half of 2026 used QR codes, with QR code phishing threats being most prevalent in the US (19 % of detections), Spain (17 %), and Mexico (6 %).

Finally, ransomware activity showed no signs of slowing down, with the continued use of “EDR killers” — tools designed to disable security software during attacks. ESET’s research team has documented more than 100 different EDR killers in circulation, and new variants appear regularly. The number of ransomware attacks continued to grow in the first half of 2026, but the number of victims willing to pay reached historic lows. Three recent industry reports confirmed this downward trend, indicating that between 14% and 28% of victims paid the ransom.

Topics of paramount importance and interest to both experts and cautious users who follow these incidents.

According to the ransomware.live report, the three groups that dominated the first quarter of the year were Qilin, The Gentlemen, and Akira, which together accounted for almost 900 victims, representing more than 30% of the total attacks (approximately 2,200).

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-121523 size-full" src="https://bitfinance.news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Imagen-complementaria-A.jpg" alt="Most active ransomware groups in the first quarter of 2026. Source: ransomware.live

Qilin ransomware took first place with more than 400 attacks during the quarter. This ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) group, which also held this position last year, took the professionalization of cybercrime to a new level, so to speak, by providing legal counsel to its affiliates to strengthen their leverage during ransom negotiations.

Second place, with almost 250 attacks, went to The Gentlemen. This RaaS group represents a new era: it is moving away from mass attacks to focus on tailored operations. A silent and far more dangerous model, according to ESET, that redefines the rules of the game with targeted and adaptive campaigns.

Akira completed this negative podium, with more than 200 attacks to its name, many in Latin America. Its spread was so widespread that it even put major cybersecurity agencies around the world on alert, including the FBI.

Regarding the industries most affected by ransomware during the first three months of 2026, ESET found the manufacturing, technology, and healthcare sectors to be the most impacted. Following closely behind were business services, construction, and financial services.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-121524 size-full" src="https://bitfinance.news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Imagen-complementaria-B.jpg" alt="Industries most affected during the first quarter of 2026. Source: ransomware.live

“What is clear is that cyber attackers do not choose their victims randomly, but rather seek out organizations where they can generate a strong impact or sense of urgency, whether due to the immediate need to have their systems available, because they cannot afford long operational downtime, or because they handle critical or sensitive information. Ransomware groups continue to focus on economic and reputational impact, targeting industries undergoing digitalization but demonstrating less maturity in cybersecurity,” says Mario Micucci, Cybersecurity Researcher at ESET Latin America.

Internationally, with more than 1,000 attacks recorded, the United States was the country most affected by ransomware during the first quarter of 2026. The countries that followed recorded only 100 attacks or fewer, such as Germany, Great Britain, and France. Canada completed the top five affected countries.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-121525 size-full" src="https://bitfinance.news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Imagen-complementaria-C.jpg" alt="Countries most affected during the first quarter of 2026. Source: ransomware.live

Regarding Latin America, Brazil (50 attacks) and Mexico (30) were the most affected countries, but incidents were also recorded in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala, Panama, and the Dominican Republic

The first quarter of 2026 confirms the trend that ransomware is not a temporary or declining threat, but a consolidated and constantly evolving phenomenon. “The combination of highly active groups, new emerging actors, and increasingly targeted attacks demonstrates that the model remains profitable for cyber attackers. Looking ahead, the focus should be on how organizations can strengthen their prevention, detection, and response capabilities, especially in critical sectors and regions where cybersecurity maturity still has significant gaps,” concludes Micucci of ESET.

The malware can capture data from the lock screen, stop uninstallation attempts, collect device information, take screenshots, record screen activity, and much more. This is the second AI-based malware discovered by ESET Research, following PromptLock in August 2025, the first known case of AI-driven ransomware.

This is information of general technological interest in the field of cybersecurity, and of course, an important finding for all Android users in particular.

Key points of the ESET research

PromptSpy is the first known Android malware that uses generative AI in its execution.

PromptSpy uses Google’s Gemini algorithm to interpret the elements displayed on the compromised device’s screen and provide instructions on how to perform various actions to remain in the recent apps list.

The primary goal is to deploy a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) module on the victim’s device, allowing attackers to view the screen and perform actions remotely.

PromptSpy can capture lock screen data, prevent uninstallation, gather device information, take screenshots, record screen activity, and perform other malicious activities.

This time, while generative AI is used in a portion of the code responsible for achieving persistence, it has a significant impact on the malware’s adaptability. Specifically, Gemini is used to analyze the current screen and provide PromptSpy with instructions on how to ensure the malicious application remains in the recent apps list, preventing the system from easily removing it. The AI model and prompt are predefined in the code and cannot be modified.

“The use of generative AI allows malicious actors to adapt to virtually any device, design, or version of the Android operating system, which can greatly expand the number of potential victims,” says Lukáš Štefanko, the ESET researcher who discovered PromptSpy. “The main objective of this malware is to deploy an embedded VNC module, which gives operators remote access to the victim’s device,” Štefanko adds.

PromptSpy is distributed through a specific website and has never been available on Google Play

The expert and researcher elaborates that, based on linguistic localization clues and distribution vectors observed during the analysis, this campaign appears to be financially motivated and primarily targeting users in Argentina.

PromptSpy is distributed through a specific website and has never been available on Google Play. However, as a partner of the App Defense Alliance, ESET shared the findings with Google. Android users are automatically protected against known versions of this malware by Google Play Protect, which is enabled by default on Android devices with Google Play Services.

Given that the app’s name is MorganArg and its icon appears to be inspired by Morgan Chase, the malware is likely trying to impersonate Morgan Chase bank. MorganArg, almost certainly an abbreviation of “Morgan Argentina,” also appears as the name of the cached website, suggesting a regional focus.

PromptSpy blocks uninstallation by overlaying invisible elements on the screen. The only way for the victim to remove it is to restart the device in safe mode, where third-party apps are disabled and can be uninstalled normally. To enter safe mode, users typically have to press and hold the power button, press and hold “Power off,” and confirm the “Reboot to safe mode” message (although the exact method may vary depending on the device and manufacturer).

Once the phone restarts in safe mode, the user can go to Settings → Applications → MorganArg and uninstall it without interference.

“Although PromptSpy only uses Gemini in one of its functions, it still demonstrates how the implementation of these tools can make malware more dynamic, providing malicious actors with ways to automate actions that would normally be more difficult with traditional scripts,” says Štefanko of ESET.

According to the expert, Venezuela’s position on the international geopolitical agenda also draws the attention of criminals from other countries who operate without borders.

– Venezuela is in the news, so cybercriminals from any other country also come, we call their attention, and since there are no borders in the digital realm, they can launch attacks by fishing in troubled waters. What does that mean? Well, let’s see how Venezuela’s systems are, let’s see what IP addresses are and they start attacking remotely, details Núñez.

Cyberattacks and their methods

One of the most common vectors of cyberattacks in the banking sector, for example, is phishing, a technique that uses identity theft to obtain, steal, confidential information, which Núñez calls “decoy traps.”This method is based on social engineering, defined s the art of tricking people’s cognitive biases into voluntarily giving up data.

Rafael Núñez points out that these cyberattacks use psychological manipulation through emails, text messages, WhatsApp, or Telegram.

“They pose as a friend, an employee, or a trusted person, but they play with emotions (exploiting them); that is, psychological manipulation, using fear, joy, hurry, urgency, and people fall quickly,” he reasons.

The Venezuelan expert warns that criminals have become more sophisticated in their methods, going so far as to block a user’s access to their bank, then calling them and impersonating the institution to ask for passwords or coordinate cards, data that “the bank will never ask for over the phone.”

The rise of ransomware

One of the main concerns currently for digital security in the country is the increase of ransomware cases by 30 % to 40 %. This technical term refers to a malicious computer program that blocks and encrypts a company’s information, then demands a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency, to release it and return things to normal.

The specialist reveals and highlights preventively that this type of “virtual kidnapping” has already affected a large-scale telephone operator and a relevant private banking institution, with attacks that come mostly from Eastern Europe. Something that should undoubtedly prompt caution.

Given this reality, Núñez emphasizes the need for immutable and encrypted backup systems, as well as data segmentation, since “nothing is 100% secure” and current attacks can even be rented, enhanced, and programmed with the support of artificial intelligence.

Legislation and shortage of professionals

Institutionally, Núñez, who is also the director of security and a member of the board of the Venezuelan Chamber of E-commerce (Cavecom), said that legal reforms are being pushed forward.

The current Law against Computer Crimes dates back to 2001, so new regulations are being proposed to regulate artificial intelligence and to classify modern crimes such as bullying, grooming, and cyberbullying.

However, another obstacle is added to the convenient and necessary update of the legal framework: the lack of specialized human capital. Núñez emphasized that in Latin America, there is a shortage of nearly four million information security professionals.

“Many times the bank asks for a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) and it can’t be found,” he added.

Although there are academic programs at universities located in San Antonio de Los Altos and Maracay, the specialist insists that there is a need for greater impetus and training that generates enough professionals to meet the labor demand in this field.

“I created a portal called másquecampus.com, with some updated and high-quality courses, but more initiatives and opportunities are needed. Personally, we attend, we go to international master’s programs, but there is still a need for more drive, not just in Venezuela, but in Latin America,” concludes expert Rafael Núñez Aponte.

The third-party provider suffered an extortion attack, similar to ransomware, in which attackers accessed sensitive data and demanded a ransom to retain the stolen information. ESET, a leading company in proactive threat detection, is analyzing the incident, which affected users who had interacted with customer service and trusted and safety representatives.

Among the leaked and compromised data were identity documents, partial credit card details, and payment history.

According to the incident notification that Discord sent to affected users and made public on its website, the attackers did not access the most sensitive information, such as physical addresses, full credit or debit card details, or authentication data. “Nor did they access messages other than those exchanged with the customer support center,” they detailed.

Official statement on Discord’s website (Source: Discord)

While it is asserted that the cybercriminal group did not have direct access to the platform’s servers, ESET maintains that the case demonstrates how a service with high security standards can be weakened at one of the links in its supply chain.

Third-party services and their weaknesses, explains Jake Moore, ESET Global Security Advisor, “are more difficult to monitor and control, and they often store sensitive information, so they are becoming common targets for cybercriminals.”

A security incident reportedly occurred on September 20, which is still under investigation. Since October 3, the platform began notifying each affected party about the breach and has issued a statement alerting the community at large.

Data affected and/or compromised

According to the information published by Discord, the compromised data includes:

Usernames, email addresses, and contact information.

Payment information, such as the last four digits of card details and purchase history.

IP addresses.

Messages and attachments sent to customer service, or inquiries to members of the platform’s trust and safety department.

Corporate information, such as training materials and internal presentations.

According to the same alert, the data accessed by cybercriminals includes “a small number” of identity documents, such as driver’s licenses or passports, which are often requested to verify a Discord member’s age. While the volume of these leaked documents is not detailed, the platform assures that the incident notification email specifies this information for each affected user. This means that if you receive an email notifying you of the data breach, it will clarify which data was compromised.

“The recommendation for any user of the platform who has been affected, or who uses Discord, is to pay special attention to any communication that appears to originate from Discord, as the possibility of data being used in targeted phishing campaigns is higher. Cybercriminals may not only leverage the leaked information, but also the news of the leak to use that excuse or bait to launch a specific campaign targeting users of the platform—even if they were not the targets of this latest leak,” warns Camilo Gutiérrez Amaya, Head of the ESET Latin America Research Lab.

Regardless of whether you were notified or not, ESET assures that this is a good opportunity to review some recommendations that may be essential in the event of incidents like this:

Check if you have two-step verification enabled on your account. This provides an additional layer of protection against login credentials leaks.

Review payment transactions if you use Discord Nitro or other paid services.

Importance of strengthening the supply chain (be careful with suppliers)

At the time of this publication, and according to an article on the specialized website BleepingComputer, the Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters (SLH) ransomware group had initially claimed responsibility for the attack, although they later told that outlet that the attack was carried out by another group with ties to SLH.

In response, Google Drive is strengthening security with new features that are not limited to a threat alert, but also help recover lost items in the event of an attack.

In this regard, the technology company recently announced “the deployment of a dual feature that combines the detection of behaviors associated with ransomware with the ability to restore files from previous versions.”

The update will be released in beta on October 14 for both Google Workspace and personal account users. “This is a layer of protection that will be activated by default and seeks to immediately stop the spread of damage when a threat is detected on the local system,” according to Google.

On the other hand, the company detailed that the detection system is based on Drive for desktop version 114 or higher, capable of recognizing patterns characteristic of malicious encryption attacks. “When suspicious activity is detected, synchronization is automatically stopped, preventing compromised files from being replicated in the cloud.”

At the same time, the user receives a notification, “and, if applicable, the Workspace account administrator, allowing for a more agile and contained response.”

Regarding the restoration feature, they indicated that it “allows the recovery of affected files without having to resort to local copies or third-party services. From the Drive interface itself, users can select multiple damaged items and return them to a state prior to the attack.”

This is a relatively simple operation, as it is manual, guided step by step, “and represents a direct response to one of the most critical ransomware scenarios: when there is no recent backup or when it has also been encrypted.”

The feature will initially be released for the Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise, and Education editions of Google Workspace. Administrators must enable it from the configuration panel, which means it won’t be activated automatically in all cases.

It is evident that cyberattacks can have devastating consequences, from the loss of critical data and operational interruptions, to reputational damage and large fines for regulatory non-compliance. This is why Pegaso Corretaje de Seguros presents IronSecurity, in association with Más Que Seguridad (MQS), an innovative comprehensive cyber insurance, thus leading cybersecurity based on a solid track record.

With the support and collaboration of MQS, a leading cybersecurity company in the Venezuelan context, one of the most prominent and mentioned abroad, whose director is Rafael Núñez Aponte, an expert in information and communication technologies (ICT) as well as an international speaker, IronSecurity is providing the most complete and advanced solution on the market.

Núñez points out that this assistance and products “combine cutting-edge preventive services, incident response with the participation of specialists and comprehensive coverage of financial losses. They offer 360-degree protection against the most sophisticated and harmful threats.”

In Venezuela, digital transformation has led companies to face new risks. According to data shared during the First International Cybersecurity Congress, the annual increase in ransomware or data kidnapping worldwide has grown 20% year after year, continuously for the last four years.

-Only in Latin America, more than 470 thousand attacks were registered, and many Venezuelan companies are part of this statistic, with a high financial impact in various sectors of the economy and national life, especially the financial and telecommunications sectors.

The average cost of a ransomware attack is estimated at $5 million, and it can take an organization about 190 days to discover – identify and confirm – that it has been compromised.

All organizations are at risk / Service packages

IronSecurity offers a suite (set of tools and programs) with risk control resources for companies of all sizes, built on almost two decades of experience in cyber insurance, which stands out and is a leader.

Therefore, it is 100 % advisable to contact them and obtain more information on the matter, since through their policies, in different variants, against cyber threats, broad and effective protection is obtained.

In the current panorama of constantly evolving cyber threats, it is concluded that it is essential for companies in Venezuela to have solid and reliable protection. IronSecurity represents the most complete and cutting-edge solution on the market, combining, as has been said, preventive services, incident response and financial coverage, so that your business is prepared for current and future cyber challenges, ends specialist Rafael Núñez.

“It’s been 15 years where the company and the brand have trusted the country, educating on the subject of cybersecurity,” said Carlos López, support and training manager at ESET Venezuela. “We have always worked on the educational pillar, raising user awareness to make the Internet a safer place.”

Artificial intelligence, a technology in constant evolution, was one of the central points of the day. López highlighted that this tool, while representing a great advance, also poses new challenges. “We must always be at the pace and level of technology,” he said.

Michele Flammia: Solid commitment

For her part, Michele Flammia, general manager of ESET Venezuela, highlighted the company’s commitment to the national market since 2009. “ESET is a cybersecurity company that has antivirus, anti-malware, XDR protection products and all the technologies that use artificial intelligence.”

José Luis Rangel, commercial manager of the company, emphasized the importance of education in this area: “We have managed to bring awareness talks to important educational institutions in the country.” It is important that people never take for granted that security is not necessary on their electronic devices, he stressed.

ESET’s positive outlook

ESET executives agreed that one of the main challenges is getting companies and users in general to understand the importance of protecting themselves from cyberthreats and implementing preventive measures. “Many still see cybersecurity as an expense and not an investment,” said Flammia.

Despite the challenges, ESET representatives were optimistic about the future. “We will always be at the forefront of technology,” said Flammia. “You can continue to trust in ESET’s development.”

Education and awareness are essential foundations of the company’s strategy in Venezuela. For this reason, they have developed various educational programs aimed at students, professionals and companies, with the aim of strengthening the culture of cybersecurity in the country.
