The European Commission will review the acquisition of the Israeli semiconductor manufacturer Autotalks by the US multinational Qualcomm following requests from Spain and 14 other Member States to re-evaluate the merger proposal, considering that it may affect competition in their territories since it eliminates a relevant competitor in a concentrated market.

The proposed acquisition does not meet the notification thresholds set out in the EU merger regulation, and could not be notified in any Member State, but Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden submitted initial referral requests based on the provision of the rule that allows them to request the Commission to examine a concentration that does not have a Community dimension but affects trade within the single market and threatens to significantly affect competition in the territory of the countries making the request.

Other countries from the European Economic Area had the opportunity to join the original referral requests and subsequently the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania and Slovakia joined the initial requests. This is the second time that the Commission has accepted referral requests.

Based on the information available to the Commission at this early stage, and without prejudice to the outcome of its full investigation, Brussels considers that the transaction meets the referral criteria in accordance with the regulation.

The Community Executive has asked Qualcomm to notify the transaction, which cannot be carried out without the authorization of the Commission, a merger that can combine two of the main suppliers of V2X semiconductors, a key technology to improve road safety, traffic management and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as well as for the deployment of autonomous vehicles.

In this sense, Brussels considers it important to guarantee that customers such as original equipment manufacturers or infrastructure managers maintain access to V2X technology at competitive prices and conditions.

Apple plans to introduce its first four nanometer (nm) modems, which it will produce through Taiwanese processor maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), in 2023.

As Nikkei has published, with this partnership, the company co-founded by Steve Jobs plans to adopt TSMC’s four-nanometer chip production technology to produce its first internal 5G modem chip and thus reduce its dependence on Qualcomm.

Last December, the company began developing its own modem for mobile phones in order to reduce dependence on Qualcomm, the supplier of these devices for the iPhone 12 and 13 series with 5G connectivity.

Since the beginning of 2021, processor manufacturers, such as the American Qualcomm, have been denouncing a global shortage of semiconductors, which depend mainly on Asian and Taiwanese companies, such as TSMC.

Own production

This agreement would give Apple some security to continue marketing its products without the need to depend on the company that until now was listed as the supplier of most of its components, which translates into greater control over its integration capacity of ‘hardware’.

According to what the aforementioned medium publishes, for the new iPhone 5G modem Apple is using the production of five nanometer (nm) chips from TSMC to design, test and produce what will be its own four nanometer SoC. According to Nikkei, it will not be commercialized until 2023.

As reported by the same media last July, iPad tablets will be the first to adopt TSMC’s three-nanometer technology. Nikkei has added that in the second half of 2022 Apple will use the four-nanometer technology from TSMC and not from Qualcomm, as before, for its iPhone processor.

It should be remembered that Apple acquired most of the business of modems for smartphones from Intel in mid-2019. This move was made known after the agreement reached between Qualcomm and the technology company by which the former agreed to provide its chips to Apple for six years.

HMD has updated the entry-level Nokia smartphones with the Nokia 1.4 model that runs on the Android GO Edition version of the operating system and is priced less than 100 euros.

Nokia 1.4 features a large 6.5-inch screen with HD + resolution, 20: 9 aspect ratio and a frameless design – just a small strip at the bottom – with a notch where the front camera of 5 megapixels is located.

The main camera, located on the back, uses two lenses: an 8-megapixel main and a 2-megapixel macro, as well as a LED flash.

This equipment, 99 euros, works with the Qualcomm QM215 processor, dedicated to the entry range, with 1GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage.

It works with Android 11 Go Edition and integrates a 4,000mAh battery.

Snapdragon 870 integrates the Snapdragon X55 5G modem to offer high-end mobile phones 5G capabilities (with a peak speed of up to 7.5Gbps) and support for mmWave and Sub-6Ghz.

This processor also has Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6800 technology, with support for WiFi 6 connectivity and Bluetooth audio, as stated in the statement published on the official website.

Qualcomm has included in this processor Kryo 585 CPU, which improves performance over the Snapdragon 865+ model, up to 3.2 Ghz, and Adreno 650 GPU. It also has the fifth generation of Qualcomm’s artificial intelligence (AI) engine and the processor Hexagon 698 digital signal module with Hexagon Tensor Accelerator technology.

Snapdragon 870 will be integrated into mobiles from the Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO and Xiaomi brands, which will be announced in the first quarter of 2021.
