Instagram has confirmed that it will start displaying vertical photos posted on the social network in a full-screen 16:9 aspect ratio, instead of the usual 4:5, “in a week or two.”

The platform began to propose certain changes in its design a few weeks ago, when it announced that it would focus its strategy on ‘reels’ instead of continuing with its usual commitment to static ‘feed’ publications.

However, at the end of July, the Meta-owned social network stopped testing the redesign of its ‘app’, which contemplated changes such as a full-screen ‘feed’ or the transition of all videos on the platform to the reels after receiving criticism from its users.

Now, the CEO of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has confirmed in his personal profile and in an ‘Ask me anything’ session, where he answers questions from platform users, that he maintains his commitment to prioritizing content on the complete screen.

The vertical photos published on the social network will be those that are shown with an aspect ratio of 16:9, instead of the usual 4:5. This change implies that these images will adopt the same size as the Stories or ‘Reels’, which maintain characteristics similar to those of TikTok.

Mosseri has anticipated that the change will begin to reach users of the social network “in one or two weeks”, as reported by The Verge. Likewise, he recalled that, because the platform already supports videos in that format, he seeks with this change to offer “equal” treatment to photographs.

Twitter decided to extend the ban to private images and videos of individuals due to the “growing misuse” of these elements “as a tool to harass, intimidate and reveal people’s identities,” according to information published on its official blog.

The company admits that the exposure of videos and images tends to potentially violate “the privacy of a person”, in addition to “causing emotional or physical damage”, affecting women, activists, dissidents and members of minority communities.

In order to achieve the objective, the company will proceed to demonstrate and delete the image or video published without consent when either the affected person or an authorized representative notifies the platform. Anyway, the measure has some limitations because it is directed only at private persons and not at “public persons or multimedia resources that may have public interest, as in the case of disappeared persons.”

The fact of sharing private information on the Internet about a person without their consent is a practice known as ‘doxing’, which can put the physical and emotional safety of the person at risk, by identifying them before an “anonymous public, even motivating campaigns of bullying”.

‘Doxing’ was already prohibited on the Twitter platform, according to its agreements or policies “on private information” of the company, that is why it is not allowed to publish personal information such as “telephone number, email, physical addresses or identity documents. Nor is it allowed to encourage other users to do so or to blackmail the victim to prevent their publication.”

Facebook will control the prominence of political content on its eponymous social network and this week will carry out a test to reduce this type of publications among a limited number of users in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia, and later in the United States. 

The measures of the social network, which were already advanced by Mark Zuckerberg at the end of January in the presentation of the latest economic results of Facebook, aim to “better understand the different preferences of people for political content and test various measures based in these data“, as the US company announced in a statement.

As a first step, Facebook will conduct a test to “temporarily reduce the distribution of political content in the news feed.” This measure will take place this week among a limited number of users from Canada, Brazil and Indonesia, and in the coming weeks it will also take place in the United States.

In the initial phases, Facebook will explore various ways to rank political content in its feed using signals, and will use these tests to decide the strategy to launch in the future, by surveying participating users. 

Facebook has stressed that political publications will not be removed in any case, but will only try to reduce their dissemination, since users have stated that “they do not want political content to take over their news feed,” according to the company. According to Facebook analysis, 6 % of Facebook posts are considered political content in the United States.
