This Monday, the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab, announced the launch of the road safety campaign “Drive for Life”, with the aim of safeguarding the lives of drivers and pedestrians, in addition to reducing the growing rate of fatal accidents on Venezuelan roads.

According to Saab, this is a joint effort between the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) and public entities that will allow the deployment of “24 superior prosecutors’ offices and 22 specialized prosecutors’ offices, 40 service points, 300 MP officials, 200 Civil Protection personnel, 300 members of the National Traffic Police, 24 road safety classrooms, 120 employees of the National Transport Institute, 70 troops of the Bolivarian National Guard, 45 members of the Municipal Police, 10 officials of the Ministry of Transport and 480 employees of the Ministry of Health.”

The Directorate of Transport, Vehicles and Roads, attached to the General Directorate against Common Crimes and the Executive Branch, governors, mayors and the Communal Branch, are joining this campaign in order to bring to the public the most information through educational material on the consequences of fatal accidents that occur daily throughout the territory.

“The goal is to reduce the rate of fatal accidents in all states and municipalities of the country,” said Saab.

This Saturday, September 7, the vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodróguez, confirmed the departure for Spain of the former Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, after both nations complied with the relevant protocols for political asylum in the European nation.

Urrutia was subject to an arrest warrant from the Public Ministry, following the events following the presidential elections in Venezuela on July 28.

Rodríguez assured on his Instagram account that Venezuela and Spain complied with the due process protocols for the former opposition candidate to leave for Spain this Saturday as a political asylum, where he left on an Spanish Armed Forces plane.

This Monday, September 2, the Anti-Terrorist Court of Venezuela issued an arrest warrant against former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, of the opposition, and commissioned the CICPC to carry out the procedure.

Four people were recently detained by the Venezuelan authorities, in Carabobo state, for being allegedly linked to cryptocurrency scams. It was indicated by the director of the Scientific, Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC), Douglas Rico on the social network Instagram.

The detainees are at the order of the Public Ministry with the accusation of counterfeiting and fraud with cryptocurrencies. The official reported that the citizens are part of a criminal gang called “The Counterfeiters of Cryptoassets” and legally represent a company linked to the ecosystem of cryptoassets.

According to the information provided by Rico, the alleged fraudsters “introduced a false registration authorization in order to obtain capital through advice and deceit third parties” and carried out their activities “through the Telegram messaging application.”

Other crimes related to cryptocurrencies

This is not the only case that has been registered in Venezuela related to cryptocurrency scams. During 2021, the Venezuelan authorities have registered several events, and according to the firm Chainalysis, it is the seventh nation with the highest adoption of cryptocurrencies.

One of the cases reported by authorities occurred last October when the CICPC arrested two men for defrauding $ 133,000 through the bitcoin exchange Binance. Another similar event occurred, last May, when the judicial body arrested two citizens for defrauding $ 130,000 on the LocalBitcoins platform.

While in June another citizen was also captured for allegedly appropriating 7.9 Bitcoins, equivalent, at that time, to more than $ 300,000.

Due to the boom that this type of event has been registering, within the Caribbean country, the CICPC director urges the community to use “regular and previously verified channels to trade crypto assets, always safeguarding integrity and using platforms that guarantee security.”

The Venezuelan Public Ministry received a complaint against José Alejandro Figueira de Abreu for the alleged crimes of fraud and money laundering by appropriating 7.9 bitcoins representing more than 300 thousand dollars.

The complaint was made this Thursday by the lawyer of the businessman Gaspare Di Campo Salermo, who hired the services of Figueira de Abreu, in 2018, as a specialized broker to manage investments in cryptocurrencies.

One yerar later, the businessman asked the defendant for the earnings of his investment, but to date he has not received any type of benefits, nor the capital contributed to make said investment, demanding the return of his cryptocurrencies or its equivalent in foreign currency.

Legal measures

There are various actions that the judicial authorities apply in the investigation of these crimes. The legal representative of the complainant requested the verification of the emails, bitcoin wallets, and the tracking of the different mobile applications on the defendant’s devices.

He has also asked for the blocking of the different bank account and the confiscation of the defendant’s property and real estate, in addition to the issuance of an urgent arrest warrant against Figueira de Abreu.
