This was reported by the computer security company ESET.

Computer attacks through this remote desktop protocol allows hackers to access and intervene in a computer through the Internet as if you were present in front of it.

According to the registry made by ESET, Spain occupies the first place, followed by Italy with half of the Spanish cases, while France, Germany and Poland, in that order, complete the five countries most affected by computer attacks in 2021.

Ladislav Janko, senior malware researcher at ESET, explained that the reasons why computers in Spain are so vulnerable are unknown. However, he believes “some entities maintain potentially valuable systems exposed to the Internet that attract the attention of criminals.”

Cybersecurity in work environments

All Windows PCs have remote desktop functionality and its use has increased as a result of the pandemic, as many workers are working from home. Remote Access Protocol is an easy way to control your work computer from home. However, they do not have enough security or people use very easy to predict username and password combinations.

Josep Albors, director of research and awareness at ESE, admits “there is still much to be done in terms of cybersecurity in work environments“. Likewise, he highlighted that the second vector of attack is e-mail. “Our country is the second in the world in this type of attacks. It is surprising that cybercriminals continue to have remarkable success exploiting vulnerabilities from 5 years ago to carry out email attacks.”
