UNCTAD Assistant Secretary-General Pedro Moreno was responsible for opening the United Nations Conference on Cocoa in mid-February. During the session, the new International Cocoa Agreement 2026 was presented.

This instrument, which places the cocoa producer at the center of this important commodity, replaces the 2010 agreement and establishes objectives adapted to current times: achieving a living wage for producers, fostering international cooperation, and promoting economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

“During the plenary session on February 13, 2026, the Executive Director of the ICCO (International Cocoa Organization), Michel Arron, presented the history and evolution of the Agreement intended to succeed the 2010 Cocoa Agreement.”

Support from cocoa-producing and consuming countries worldwide is expected. Among the nations that gave initial support to the new agreement on February 13 are Nicaragua, Côte d’Ivoire, and Togo, countries that signed the agreement in Geneva. Russia also joined.
