Corn production in Venezuela currently covers 50 % of demand. According to Saúl Elías López, president of the Venezuelan Society of Agricultural Engineers, there is great uncertainty this year due to the climate situation and the conditions in the sector.

According to the union representative, in 2025, approximately 305,000 hectares were planted, of which 65 % was white corn and the remainder yellow corn. However, given the possibility of more prolonged droughts due to climate change, this figure could decrease, leading to a greater reliance on imports.

In this regard, he emphasized that the country has been importing a significant number of tons of corn from countries like Brazil and Argentina since the beginning of 2026, and this is expected to increase in the coming years.

“These imports are covering 50 % of the country’s demand… producers expect that imports will continue, which will affect prices. Adding to this the climate uncertainty, we know that many farmers who had planned to plant 400 hectares will now opt to plant half that amount because of the current uncertainty,” said López.
