Given the immediacy of the internet, an unintentional click can cause a sensitive image, not meant to be shared, to be published. In this regard, and to protect users, Google is expanding its “About You” system: a feature that not only tracks personal information in search results but now also makes it easier to locate and request the removal of explicit images that should never have left your private camera roll.

Although not entirely new, the tech giant is now expanding the scope of privacy so that “people can request the removal of information such as phone numbers, addresses, emails, driver’s license numbers, passports, social security data, and other official identifications that could be used to harass, impersonate, or extort.”

Furthermore, and most critically, it addresses “the management of intimate or explicit photos that appear in Google search results without consent.” This isn’t simply about deleting isolated data points, but about providing users with a clearer mechanism against the unwanted dissemination of sensitive content.

Manage personal information from the Google mobile app

Encryption protocols and an updated interface will be implemented, simplifying previously cumbersome processes. To perform this cleanup, users must go to the Google mobile app. From there, they can access their profile picture and enter the “Results about you” section, the central panel where “the personal information being tracked in search results is managed.”

Once there, users can register names, aliases, phone numbers, email addresses, or other identifiers they wish to monitor. After completing the process, the system will automatically monitor search results and notify users upon detecting matches. These alerts can also be sent via email, allowing for swift action.

In the case of sexually explicit photos, users can click on the three dots in the corner of the image, select the option to remove results, and check “Show a sexual image of me.” According to Google, the tool has been optimized to manage multiple images in a single form.

The change, “confirmed in the latest beta version for Android (v2.25.28.12), represents the end of the exclusive reliance on the phone number as the sole form of identification and contact on the platform.”

The implementation of usernames on WhatsApp is an important step in terms of privacy. As is known, currently it is necessary to share your personal number to contact someone. But this is sensitive information, especially for those who use the app in work or public contexts.

By removing this requirement, the number is released, as WhatsApp users “can be found and added without having to share their phone number, thus protecting their personal information.”

Furthermore, the unique identifier is activated, through which “each user can choose their own alias, just like on social networks like Instagram or rival apps like Telegram.”

To prevent the most coveted aliases from being monopolized, the platform is developing a pre-registration mechanism for usernames. It also “plans to include a username password system” that will allow users to control who can start conversations, even if they know your alias, adding an extra layer of security.”

In the meantime, authorities are focused on two key issues: privacy and holding limits.

A second report published by the European Central Bank (ECB) details the progress of the “preparatory stage of the issuance of the digital euro.”

Of course, the regulatory body also continues to analyze aspects such as the harmonization of laws. “Following a review of the regulation in development for the digital euro, the Regulation Development Group launched seven lines of work with market participants and central banks that will continue its development.”

This regulation focuses on “harmonising national laws to ensure universal standards”. In parallel, research continues on “a user profile of the digital euro to identify the needs of potential users. This information will include user preferences on holding limits, which will be considered in technical research carried out with national central banks”.

The report highlights the importance of maintaining the euro as the European currency. In addition, the possibility of “payment service providers (PSP)” using the digital euro infrastructure to create new payment services.

However, when fake or cracked applications are downloaded, users are exposed to a breach of their security and privacy.

Malicious applications are not always easily recognized. The problem is that they are increasing and users must be aware of the recommendations of the manufacturer and cybersecurity experts to avoid the theft of personal information, theft of funds, among other crimes.

In an increasingly digitalized world, being a victim of fraud is part of daily life. However, there are ways to reduce the risk to a minimum. In the case of applications that you want to download, it is recommended to do so from the official store of the provider.

The main thing is to download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. You can first install an antivirus that can detect fake apps. On the other hand, it is important to pay attention to the permissions that each app requests. Malicious or fake apps often request too many permissions.

Access to third-party applications can be managed and allows you to see which ones are configured. The user only has to go to the Application Name section. There you will see that the verified ones have a check mark and the word Verified after the name.

The main thing is to download from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. You can first install an antivirus that can detect fake apps.

This is about preventing users from taking screenshots of conversations.

The ban on taking screenshots will be activated in the latest beta version of the application. In this way, even the profile identification photo cannot be captured. They have indicated that this seeks to avoid scams, identity theft and harassment.

Although it may be uncomfortable, the measure “seeks to provide greater security to users, who will be able to feel more at ease knowing that their profile photos and other personal information will be protected from prying eyes.”

In any case, it is important to detail how this prohibition will work. Once the update is activated, if the user attempts to take a screenshot of a contact’s profile, it will appear that this has happened and that the image has been saved. However, when you go to the Gallery and try to open it, a message will appear indicating that “the image has been blocked to protect the privacy of users.”

The measure applies “both to added contacts and to those who are not added, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of all users of the platform.”

From now on, default security alerts will be extended to users of web extensions and mobile apps across multiple blockchains, including Linea, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism and Avalanche.

This move comes at a crucial time for MetaMask, as the wallet is experiencing significant growth in its user base. From September 2023 to January 2024, the number of monthly active users has increased from 19 million to 30 million. This momentum is partly attributed to key partnerships with popular trading platforms such as Robinho.

The security alert feature was initially introduced on the core Ethereum network via an extension on January 29, 2024. These alerts inform users in real time during transactions, alerting them to possible known threats. The feature simulates the requested transaction, identifies malicious patterns and alerts users if the transaction is expected to result in a loss of funds.

A prominent feature of MetaMask security alerts is its focus on privacy. Unlike many Web3 wallets, which share transaction data with third parties to validate security alerts, MetaMask focuses on protecting its users’ information.

The alert system originated in April 2023 as an optional pilot alert in OpenSea, where it helped protect assets worth a total of $500 million. The success of these alerts led MetaMask to implement them in its own wallet as well.

In collaboration with its security partner, Blockaid, MetaMask has managed to prevent phishing scams and protect users. A notable example was in September 2023, when Vitalik user X was the victim of a hack. Thanks to security alerts, many users were able to avoid falling into this trap.

Security remains a priority for MetaMask, and its commitment to protecting users’ assets is evident in this latest update.

Since the beginning of November, Meta has implemented a controversial “privacy tariff” of up to 250 euros per year for users who choose not to be tracked on its platforms.

Noyb argues that this practice contradicts European Union data protection regulations, which stipulate that withdrawing consent for tracking should be as simple as giving it. The partnership requires Meta to provide users with a simple way to revoke their consent at no additional cost.

Massimiliano Gelmi, Noyb’s lawyer, criticized Meta’s policy, noting that “paying 251.88 euros a year to withdraw consent is not as easy as pressing an ‘ok’ button to accept tracking.” Meta’s strategy involves charging users for selecting privacy settings, forcing those who cannot pay to accept personalized advertising based on their online activity.

The confrontation between Meta and the authorities of the European Union is not new, with data protection policy, the implementation of the “right to digital oblivion” and the management of social networks in relation to the media some of the points of conflict.

Noyb anticipates that the case could be referred to the Irish Data Protection Authority, which has jurisdiction over Meta in the EU. The lawsuit filed by Noyb seeks to set a precedent in protecting users’ privacy against questionable business practices.

This innovative feature, initially implemented in Android version 2.23.11.15 in May this year, makes it easier to find other users without the need to share contact numbers.

Following the success on the Android platform, the company decided to extend this option to iOS devices through the 23.20.1.71 beta in October. Now, according to WABetaInfo, the feature is being incorporated into the web version of WhatsApp. It is important to note that users will have the flexibility to change their username at any time.

This extra layer of security gives users the ability to communicate with each other without compromising or sharing their personal contact details. Although the exact date of implementation of this tool on the web platform has not yet been announced, this novelty promises to improve the experience and privacy of users on WhatsApp.

According to the morocotacoin platform, “this function of blocking and hiding chats with a secret code on WhatsApp complements the biometric unlocking for messages that you do not want others to access.”

The user does not need to delete the messages. It only requires placing a “blocking code on those conversations that you would prefer to keep secret.” The procedure is simple: you just have to open WhatsApp, click on the conversation you want to keep private. The three-dot menu will appear above; then open the menu and select the “Block chat” option using an emoji or a keyword.

This WhatsApp update allows you to send these conversations to the “Blocked Chats” folder, to now keep them completely secret. But this folder cannot remain empty, so at least one conversation must exist in it.

Until now, it is known that to access blocked chats, it is necessary to enter a secret code in the search bar.

The update with the new feature is available for iOS and Android, and is expected to progressively be available to all users, according to the platform.
