Microsoft announced a change with the service of third-party printer drivers, which will stop them being distributed through Windows Update in 2025,

The change that Microsoft introduces for all versions of Windows affects the v3 and v4 printer drivers, although it will not be immediate, since the technology company understands that it is a “shocking change” and therefore will be executed “over the long term” several years”, as explained on their Support page.

This means that manufacturers will no longer be able to distribute their printer drivers, installations and updates through Windows Update, as Microsoft understands that there is no need for this. This will occur in 2025, according to the roadmap detailed by the company.

Microsoft is thus prioritizing Microsoft’s IPP inbox class driver and support for the Mopria printing standard, which it introduced with Windows 10 21H2. Manufacturers will be able to continue offering controllers through separate installation packages.
