Deepening cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and China is a priority for the Caribbean nation, Prime Minister Keith Rowley stated at a local event on Saturday.

The official referred to this cooperation on Saturday, March 15, during the opening ceremony of the new Robinson International Airport terminal, located in Crown Point, in the southwest of the island, which was built by China Railway Construction Corporation (International) Limited (CRCC).

According to an interview with Chinese media outlet Xinhua, Rowley “highlighted that Trinidad and Tobago was one of the first countries in the Caribbean to sign a memorandum of understanding with China for the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.” In addition, the official emphasized his country’s interest in expanding bilateral collaboration in the future.

Rowley praised the new airport terminal’s facilities at the opening ceremony, emphasizing its modernity and advanced technology. He indicated that once it begins operations, “it will enable it to handle an annual flow of 3 million passengers, benefiting the entire population of the country.”

For his part, Herbert George, Chairman of the National Infrastructure Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago, said that the new terminal “will contribute to economic growth and strengthen the country’s position as an international tourist destination.”
