The European Union has two crucial periods for gas supply each year: March, when winter ends and summer begins, and October, when winter begins again. According to the GIE, gas reserves are currently at 61 %, “the lowest level for this time of year in recent years, even lower than that recorded in 2021.”

Gas prices rose in August. And the region is facing a slower-than-necessary filling rate. “The recent pace gives an idea of the challenge. Between early and mid-August, storage capacity increased by an average of 0.27 percentage points per day. If this rate continues, storage levels will reach around 73 % by October 1st. Europe would have to continue injecting gas throughout the autumn to keep rebuilding reserves, coinciding with the gradual increase in demand associated with heating.”

To overcome this predicament, a high rate of injection would be necessary, in addition to ensuring sufficient gas volumes, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), which entails a high cost that is passed on to the consumer.

Regarding the European regulatory framework for this sector, it “maintains a 90% filling target.” However, since the “reform of the Gas Storage Regulation, in force since September 2025, this level can be reached at any time between October 1st and December 1st.” A deviation of up to 10 percentage points is permitted when filling conditions are difficult, extendable by an additional five points by the European Commission if these conditions persist. The regulation will be in force until the end of 2027.

In any case, the reserve level for October will be the benchmark for the markets. If storage falls below the levels of recent years, the margin for absorbing a cold winter, lower renewable energy production, or renewed pressure on gas imports is reduced. Furthermore, it contributes to greater volatility in both gas and electricity market prices.

Resolution 13, dated Thursday, June 27, indicates: “Repeal the Enacom Resolutions”, concerning the limits of between 5 and 10 % per month on rates for said services.

The measure was signed by “the auditor of the organization designated by the Government, Juan Martín Ozores, and by two other deputy auditors,” thereby eliminating the regulations of the previous administration, authorizing telecommunications companies to establish price increases they may consider.

The Milei administration had taken legal measures regarding restrictions on public information and communications technology (ICT) services imposed by the previous government. In fact, there is a decree of necessity and urgency (DNU) issued in April.

In any case, it is important to highlight that the Argentine population has been taking measures to reduce expenses on telecommunications services. “A recent study by the Argentine Internet Chamber (Cabase) indicated that 67.5 % of Argentine households took some measure to cut the cost of internet service, and that 65.3 % also reduced their expenses on pay television services.

The cost of internet service currently represents 4 % of monthly income, compared to 2024, when it was 3 %. “The UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development proposed as a goal for 2025 that the costs of broadband services, fixed and mobile, will represent from 5 to less than 2 percent of the gross monthly national income per capita of each country.”

In addition, as part of a series of measures to tackle the country’s fiscal deficit, the Minister of Finance and Prices, Vladimir Regueiro, ratified a 25 % increase in electricity tariffs for the most consuming sectors.

According to the newspaper Granma, from Friday will be implemented the update of the retail prices of fuels and the 25 % increase in the electricity tariff for customers who consume more than 500 kilowatts/hour. This measure has caused concern among the population, who fear an escalation in prices in the country.

In January, crowds and long queues were observed at gas stations, but the government delayed the measure’s entry into force, citing a cybersecurity incident in computer systems.

As a result, the Minister of Economy, Alejandro Gil, was dismissed. Gil, one of the most high-profile politicians on the island, had admitted that the government could not continue subsidizing fuel.

However, the IMF also states that these protests are not expected to have a major impact on economic growth in the region.

IMF spokeswoman Julie Kozack said at a press conference that “there could be a more significant impact on prices if the protests continue for a prolonged period.”

Despite this, due to the fact that the agricultural sector in most European countries is “relatively small” in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), any economic impact is expected to be limited at this time.

For three weeks now, farmers from all over Spain and other European countries have come out to protest against various issues, such as the bureaucracy of the Common Agricultural Policy, environmental requirements for production and fair prices at source.

The main criticism focuses on the Green Deal, with which the European Union (EU) aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva also warned about the consequences for economies if governments give in to the protests.

While understanding the difficulties farmers face, Georgieva noted that if the protests continue and governments do not take the necessary steps to strengthen the economies, they may regret their decisions in the future.

(-4.7 %) and moderation in the growth of exported quantities (2.9 %).

The IDB warns that the latest indicators point to a possible continuation of this downward trend in the coming months. Factors such as rising geopolitical conflicts, restrictive monetary policies and the slowdown in global growth following the post-pandemic recovery are contributing to these results.

The most notable ‘shocks’ that have negatively affected the region include Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, persistent inflation, and tightening monetary policy in advanced countries. In addition, the report highlights the urgency of addressing crucial challenges such as food security and climate change, which are likely to impact regional trade performance in the coming years.

Adverse climatic events have also had a significant impact on economic activity, particularly in the agricultural sectors of some countries in the region.

Despite a transitory export boost linked to China’s economic acceleration in early 2023, this effect faded over the year, revealing structural challenges that will have repercussions on the global economy and trade.

The report highlights that, while goods exports from Latin America and the Caribbean have contracted, the contraction is less pronounced than that of global trade as a whole. Sales of services also showed a slight slowdown.

As for the regions, the decrease in intraregional sales (-0.6 %) was smaller than in extraregional sales (-2.2 %) during the first half of 2023. The volume of shipments increased, mainly driven by Brazil (0.7 %) and Mexico (3.9 %), while several countries experienced notable contractions, such as Colombia (-14 %) and Ecuador (-10.1 %).

Common wheat has registered a depreciation of 1.75 %, while barley is not far behind, with a decrease of 1.71 %. These decreases are attributed to the excess supply that prevails on the international scene.

Even despite worsening growing conditions in the United States for crops such as soybeans and corn, the values of the main grains continue to decline. According to sources from the Spanish Grain and Oilseed Trade Association (Accoe), this negative trend persists.

Analysis of the latest Accoe report reveals that the barley price has settled at €233.74 per tonne, representing a weekly decline of 1.71 %. For its part, soft wheat has experienced a decline of 1.75 %, standing at 255.53 euros per ton.

Regarding other cereals, corn has had a price of 264.24 euros per ton, with a weekly reduction of 0.46 %. Malt barley, for its part, registered a fall of 0.62 %, reaching 265.67 euros per ton. Oats, with a decrease of 0.23 % in the week, have been quoted at 315.71 euros per ton.

However, in this bleak picture, a rebound in the value of durum wheat stands out, which has experienced an increase of 1.38 % in just seven days, reaching a value of 390 euros per ton.

The numbers accumulated since the beginning of the year do not offer an encouraging picture. Soft wheat has suffered a price decrease of 23.60 %, while corn has fallen by 17.54 %. For its part, barley has registered a decrease of 26.48 %, durum wheat has suffered a reduction of 14.60%, malted barley has fallen by 19.09 % and oats has experienced a decline of 5, 76 %.
