According to the regulatory body, “Venezuela has accumulated twelve months with double-digit inflation rates, with January’s being the highest in that period, as well as the highest in exactly three years.”

One of the main causes for the price increase is the rise in the dollar exchange rate. “The price of the dollar on the official market went from 301.37 to 473.87 bolivars in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 57.2 %, which also represents a 36.4 % devaluation of the Venezuelan currency, the bolivar, against the US dollar.”

This is an unexpected turn of events amid the consequences triggered by the imposition of tariffs, but justified as a way to mitigate the high prices they would trigger for the product.

In the case of Apple, an American company, the decision would be understandable given that “it outsources the manufacturing of many of the electronic components of its cell phones, tablets, computers, AirPods, and other devices.”

These supplies are imported from China, the country to which Trump imposed one of the highest tariff rates, at 34 %.

(Reference image source: Bram Van Oost on Unsplash)

What typically happens when tariffs are imposed is an increase in product prices. “It is estimated that Apple will suffer a 43 % increase in the production of its devices.” If these amounts are passed on to the user, this would mean that an iPhone 16 Pro Max could cost $2,500. However, the company knows this would reduce sales.

The idea of leasing iPhones instead of selling them is not new. In fact, it is a “project that was once on the minds of Apple executives, according to Applesfera, based on a report by insider Mark Gurman.”

But how would Apple implement this idea? Well, through the creation of “a monthly subscription plan in which Apple gives you an iPhone. Paying that fee gives you the option to upgrade every one or two years, or cancel the agreement and return the device.” Additionally, these new plans would include various attractive features, “such as AirPods or even iPads.”

As a counterpart to these indices, the Venezuelan Finance Observatory (OVF), an autonomous entity made up of economic experts, maintains that for the month of August the country’s inflation was 2.8 % and the accumulated rate was 26.1 %.

The main cryptocurrency on the market has experienced drops in value throughout much of 2023. This has eroded the confidence of cryptocurrency holders. However, upon reaching USD 50,000 this Monday, specialists are betting on an upward trend that could take the price to USD 69,800, a price it reached on November 8, 2021.

Investors view this jump in the price of Bitcoin with optimism, and hope that industry conditions improve so that it can reach the levels of two years ago.

It is important to mention that during the last three months of 2023, the price of Bitcoin managed to recover, with an increase of 60 %, to close the year at USD 42,000.

It must be remembered that approximately in April of this year the fourth Bitcoin halving will occur, which generates strong expectations of an increase in the price of the cryptocurrency, as has occurred in previous ones. However, there are still more than 60 days to know what will happen.

During the month of December, the inflation rate stood at 2.4%, marking the third consecutive month of slowdown in the rise of the prices of goods and services. This downward trend is evidenced by the reported inflation of 3.5% in November and 5.9% in October, according to official data.

The education sector experienced the largest price increase in December, with an increase of 7.2%, followed closely by transport, with an increase of 4.6%; household equipment, with 3.5%; and health, with an increase of 3.3%.

The BCV report highlights that inflation in Venezuela began the year 2023 with an increase of 42.1% in January, followed by 19.3% in February. However, the next ten months of the year showed single-digit inflation rates, with the highest of 8.7% recorded in September.

With this measure, the retail price of regular B90 gasoline and regular diesel rose from 25 Cuban pesos to 132 Cuban pesos. Also, the special B94 gasoline saw an increase from 30 pesos to 156, and the special diesel rose from 27.5 pesos to 150.

During his intervention on the Round Table program, Regueiro Ale justified these actions as a strategy to “correct distortions” in prices, which, according to the news portal Cubadebate, had become outdated and affected the entire economy.

The Minister pointed out that many import prices, including those of fuel, had experienced an increase that was not adequately reflected in the Cuban economy. He also mentioned that a number of State-owned enterprises had incurred losses due to the centralized pricing policy.

Regueiro Ale reported that these increases were partly due to the reduction of state subsidies and that they would be implemented gradually to allow a constant assessment of the impact on the economy and the population.

The official highlighted that measures have been designed to mitigate the impact of these increases, offering specific protections to individuals or families in vulnerable situations, rather than maintaining a blanket subsidy.

Finally, Regueiro Ale emphasized that these measures are not isolated, but part of a broader program aimed at revitalizing the Cuban economy, considering the country’s own resources and limitations.

With this advance, it positions itself among the highest-performing currencies in the top 10 by market capitalization.

According to analyst Rekt Capital, “recent price spikes signal a ‘moment of truth‘ for the meme-inspired cryptocurrency.”

The specialist noted on the X social network that “a weekly close above the $0.07163 level would provide a strong signal of a major breakout ahead for Dogecoin.”

The various cryptocurrencies on the market have experienced recent declines. Regarding Dogecoin, it seems that investors have embraced the crypto meme, favoring its positioning among alternative cryptocurrencies.

If this trend continues, it would be a favorable change for the darling of Elon Musk, who has not even been the driving force behind this 20 % increase in its value.

It is timely to note that the main cryptocurrency on the market, bitcoin, has also shown an increase in its value, exceeding USD 34,600, with a marked upward trend.

Given the scenario of hyperinflation and dollarization of the economy, the monthly income of Venezuelans prevents covering fundamental needs due to the loss of purchasing power.

In this sense, Pérez declared: “The Central and the national government are sitting down to review, to evaluate and find a solution for the month of October for all workers.”

He stressed the importance of an “agreement between the Government, Fedecámaras and merchants so that workers’ income maintains its value.”

The vice president of the CBST said that given the economic situation in Venezuela, any increase in the income of Venezuelans should be accompanied by other measures. It is essential to address the problem of “social and salary security.”
