Dina Boluarte, president of Peru, made the announcement about the call for elections for 2026, which will be launched next year, following what is established by the Constitution of the South American nation.

“The electoral advance is part of a series of announcements that the Peruvian president makes about changes in the government during her annual message to the nation,” they indicated, clarifying that the call for general elections will be made in April of next year.

“Thus, Peru will revitalize its institutions and its democracy, through the sovereign act of citizens to elect their authorities,” said Boluarte.

The president, who faces accusations of corruption and abuse of authority, has denied any connection with these issues and has asked the people to “monitor and report any irregular events immediately so that the authorities take drastic action.”

Boluarte will seek to strengthen the economy of Peru, the third-largest producer of copper in the world, “which for years was one of the best performers in South America,” but contracted 0.6% last year due to the climate phenomenon of “El Niño, lower investment private sector and social protests that stopped production.”

The motion that requested the dismissal of the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, was shelved until 2024 due to the recess of the Legislature at the end of this year.

Internal conflicts have recently stirred in the Latin American country regarding the dismissal and arrest in 2022 of then-president Pedro Castillo. Added to this is the population’s rejection of the current president, Dina Boluarte.

According to a survey by the Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP), “only nine out of every 100 Peruvians approve of his performance as ruler, another 84 disapprove and the remaining seven are indifferent about his performance.”

Regarding the impeachment motion, it is important to highlight that despite being widely promoted by left-wing legislators, it did not enter into debate in Congress.

The opposition has accused Boluarte of alleged constitutional violation, invoking vacancy, because the president traveled to Brazil without leaving someone responsible in the presidential office.

Serious deficiencies have been argued in “terms of motivation and adequate procedure”, which determine its nullity.

Alejandro Soto, president of Congress, has been the subject of reproaches and described as a “coward” after announcing the decision to freeze Boluarte’s impeachment motion until March 2024.
