The appointment to lead APEC, by its acronym in English, represents a new challenge for Peru. Dina Boluarte received praise during the event held on November 17, in which the President of the United States, Joe Biden, participated as host in San Francisco.

Boluarte noted: “We assume this responsibility very seriously, but also with the great affection that Peruvians have in our hearts (…) We can continue building on the values of APEC, promoting equality between men and women.”

The president of Peru briefly addressed the representatives of the 21 nations that make up the Forum and took advantage of the meeting to strengthen relations not only with the United States but with China, through a meeting with Xi Jinping, in order to continue “strengthening relations and bilateral solidarity” with what is the Andean country’s first trading partner.”

Boluarte’s participation was oriented towards two fundamental pillars for APEC member countries: values and equality between men and women.

The LXIII CABEI Board of Governors, held on May 12, decided that the current president of the bank, Dante Mossi, would not be renewed in office, which has led to the opening of the term to search for new names.

The new president must take office on December 1st for a period of five years. At the moment, there are few names on the table, although the member countries have begun to articulate their strategies.

The chosen candidate must come from one of the five founding countries of CABEI, which reduces the options to five member states: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Since 1961, the institution has had five presidents from Honduras (including Mossi), four from Guatemala, three from Nicaragua, two from Costa Rica and one from El Salvador.

From El Salvador, the possibility is being considered that the former Minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya, launch his candidacy, according to Bloomberg. Currently, Zelaya is CABEI country director, after Nayib Bukele’s appointment of him to this position and his nomination for president would imply his resignation.

In recent weeks it has also become known that Guatemala and Costa Rica are considering presenting a common name to preside over the institution. This hypothetical candidate could have the approval of important partner countries that contribute large amounts of capital, such as Spain, Mexico or Taiwan.

In addition to the geographical origin and the different political interests that come into play, CABEI requires candidates to have “recognized professional capacity, honesty and experience of at least ten years in managerial and executive positions in economic, financial, banking or in development policies”.

After opening the process to run for the race on September 28, the financial institution announced last Saturday that finally five of the 48 members had presented a candidate, these being Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Trinidad and Tobago.

The five Latin American States accelerated the deadlines until the last moment, with several name changes in the case of Mexico or Argentina, which finally presented Gerardo Esquivel, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Mexico, and Cecilia Todesca, current Secretary of International Economic Relations of the Government Argentine, respectively.

For his part, the president-elect of Brazil, Lula da Silva, tried to delay the voting day, with the aim of presenting a consensus candidate, since the name proposed by the outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, was not his option. favorite, despite being one of those who are in the lead. Specifically, it is about Ilan Goldfajn, former president of the Central Bank of Brazil and director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Latin America.

For its part, the Chilean government opted for the former Minister of Finance, Nicolás Eyzaguirre, and Trinidad and Tobago nominated Gerard Johnson, a former IDB official who currently works in the Jamaican Ministry of Finance, for the post.

Ecuador dropped out of the race for the IDB presidency and Costa Rica decided not to support the country’s former president, Laura Chinchilla, so the Argentine candidate is the only woman running.

At a press conference, Biden explained that during the meeting he had told Putin that his Administration’s agenda “is not against Russia”, but to defend “the American people.” In addition, he added that after the summit he considers that “there is a genuine prospect of significantly improving” bilateral relations.

The coming months, therefore, will be a “test” to see if this week’s meeting served to bring positions closer together, while the head of the White House declared that “the tone of the meeting has been very productive and positive,” a despite the fact that there are some points “on which we did not agree”, which, however, have not produced tension between the two.

Regarding the importance of this face-to-face meeting, the US president assured that it was necessary to meet in person with his counterpart so that “there could be no errors or misrepresentations about what was being communicated.”

US President Donald Trump will leave office on January 20 with an approval rating of 34 %, the lowest of his entire term, and 8 points lower than the previous record, of October 2020, according to a study by SSRS for CNN.

In contrast, 62 % of Americans reject Trump’s performance, also the highest figure of his period in the White House. Among Republican Party voters, approval has also fallen since October, specifically by 14 points, but 80 % consider his management favorable.

As for the impeachment process opened against the president, 54 % consider that he should be dismissed as a result of the assault on the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, a figure higher than the first, at the end of 2019 and early 2020.

55 % believe that Trump is responsible for a large part of the robbery on the Capitol, 92 % among Democrats and 13% among Republicans.

Another 55 % consider Trump’s term to be a failure, compared to 41 % who consider it a success. 85 % believe that the president has changed the country, but 55 % believe that it has changed for the worse, the first data in the historical series in this regard.

The study is the result of 1,003 telephone interviews conducted between January 9 and 14 with a significant sample of the US population. It has a margin of error of about 3.7 percentage points.
