To end this problem, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEN) announced an energy independence plan.

The goal is to reduce dependence on fuel imports and generate energy with own resources, thus ending the blackouts that affect the population and disrupt the island’s economic activity.

Cuban Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy indicated on Thursday, September 11, that they are working in three directions: “recovering national oil production for electricity generation, promoting the use of renewable energy sources, and improving storage infrastructure.”

He added that the island has experienced a “decline in oil production. From more than 3.1 million tons, we reached just over 2.3 million” and emphasized the “lack of financial resources for maintenance and the necessary inputs for wells, something that the new government strategy is beginning to reverse.”

However, he believes that Cuba is currently experiencing a slight increase in production compared to 2024, “especially in gas production.”

Regarding renewable energy, photovoltaic energy plays a fundamental role in the Caribbean nation thanks to its rapid charging and high level of efficiency.

In his appearance on a television program, the minister announced the upcoming incorporation of “energy storage systems, the lack of which, he said, has been the cause of more than 500 interruptions in the national electricity system in 2024 due to a lack of regulation. Therefore, the systems will allow for the accumulation of approximately 200 MW, which will help stabilize the national grid.”

The government still faces challenges in the energy sector, related to regulation, the obsolescence of thermoelectric plants, and the lack of fuel, all of which directly impact the power outages affecting the country.

To prevent the chaos, people are now looking to solar chargers, whose power supply is inexhaustible.

Power outages are becoming increasingly common, not only in Latin America but around the world. The most recent event, which occurred in April in Spain, Portugal, and France, is driving the search for alternatives to keep basic services running during such events, and the most long-lasting option is electric chargers.

Considering that the charging source in this case is the sun, the use of solar charging devices is emerging as the best option for cell phones, personal computers, and other devices with moderate electricity demands.

When purchasing a solar charger, experts recommend paying attention to factors such as compatibility with the voltage and current of the devices it will be used with, the output power (watts), the internal battery capacity, solar charging time, and the availability of multiple output ports and an LED charging indicator.

The efficiency of the electrical panel is essential, so it is recommended to purchase high-performance ones (more than 20 %) and with excellent conversion of sunlight into electricity, especially those made of monocrystalline silicon.

The rationing of electricity will be, according to the minister, until the end of November “and until the end of December the blackouts are intended to be minimal,” added Manzano.

According to the government, they are working to reduce the power outages next month, but the weather conditions cannot be predicted in an exact way. The rains and any climate change will affect any projection.

Manzano has promised, however, that by the last days of November citizens will have electricity and suspensions will be reduced.

In opposition to this optimistic stance, the minister indicated that “the blackouts cannot continue until March” according to a report by the Electric Corporation of Ecuador (CELEC) which is responsible for making known the risks of the sector.
