Venezuelan Minister of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, provided details last Thursday about the work of researchers from the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) on a project to improve breast cancer treatment.

Jiménez indicated that the scientists are also focusing on ways to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy on patients. The official posted on Instagram: “The objective of this project is to modify the drug used for breast cancer, such as Tamoxifen, and achieve synergy with a gadolinium atom to obtain positive therapeutic and radiotherapeutic effects.”

She emphasized that the IVIC team of scientists seeks “through a molecule, to reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy.”

For his part, Álvaro Álvarez, PhD in Chemistry and project leader, noted that the objective of this project is also to reduce the dose and potency of radiation, which, he said, “also causes some inconveniences for patients.”

Álvarez explained in a video: “Once the rational synthesis has been completed, and the characterization tests have been performed, the idea is to test it on cell lines in vitro. Once that occurs, and if we are successful, it would then be tested in vivo on specimens.”
