“I understand that dignity is not compatible with any suspicion (…) The dignity of the prime minister’s functions is not compatible with any suspicion about his integrity (…) that is why, obviously, I have submitted my resignation,” Costa announced after meeting with the president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

From the Sao Bento Palace, headquarters of the Portuguese Assembly, Costa began his intervention before the media showing his “surprise” because the Prosecutor’s Office has included him in said investigation. “I close a stage with a clear conscience,” he declared, while ensuring that he will collaborate with Justice “in everything he deems necessary.”

Costa has stressed on several occasions that the position of prime minister is incompatible with any type of suspicion about his honorability, while at the same time he has stressed that he leaves without any charge of conscience for the commission of any “illegal” or “reprehensible” act. In response to questions from the media regarding his political future, Costa has announced that he will not run in the next elections.

Early on Tuesday, the Prosecutor’s Office carried out several searches, including the headquarters of the Ministries of Environment and Infrastructure, as well as several offices in the Sao Bento Palace, in Lisbon, for suspicions of corruption in the granting of a series of contracts. public related to the exploitation of lithium deposits and a project to produce energy with hydrogen.

The Police also carried out searches at the official residence of the prime minister, to examine the office of his chief of staff, Vítor Escária, who has been arrested, as has the mayor of Sines, the socialist Nuno Mascarenhas, and the businessman Diogo Lacerda Machado, a close friend of Costa.

The searches of several hours at the Environment and Infrastructure headquarters culminated in the accusation of those responsible, Duarte Cordeiro and Joao Galamba, respectively.

The Portuguese entity had withheld the funds in 2019, “after the United States Department of the Treasury announced in January of that year that it would impose sanctions on the PDVSA oil company.”

Consequently, 7,000 million dollars were frozen, as well as all the payments that had to be made to the United States companies that bought Venezuelan oil through Citgo, a subsidiary of PDVSA.

Now, after the court’s ruling, the Portuguese government will have to make the payment “of the final balance on the date of cancellation of the contracts and late-payment interest.”

The Venezuelan government was pleased to hear the news and indicated that it is a victory for the people. The money recovered will be available for social investment.

However, according to statements by former National Assembly deputy Carlos Paparoni, Maduro will not have access to the funds unfrozen by Portugal, given that they are under US Treasury measures. The Vice Minister of Anti-Blockade Policies of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, William Castillo, confirmed this information on his account on the X social network.

For his part, the candidate for the opposition primaries, Henrique Capriles, called on all unions and workers’ unions in the country for the money to be allocated to a $150 bonus for pensioners and public sector workers.

During the presentation that the manager made of its vision of the market and strategy for the coming quarters, Gutiérrez-Mellado predicted that, in this context, the Federal Reserve (Fed) will undertake one more rise in interest rates, up to the range of 5.25-5.5 %, despite the fact that its members of government have dropped the possibility of two more increases.

For its part, the European Central Bank (ECB) would raise rates with two increases of more than a quarter of a point, up to 4.5 %; and, in both cases, these maximum rates will be maintained for longer than what investors discounted to curb inflation.

The technical recession in the euro area, two quarters of negative growth, the last of last year and the first of this, caused by Germany, is temporary, the board of directors pointed out, since “it is already coming out of recession” and, furthermore, “it has barely been noticed in the markets” due to the strength of the labor market and corporate profits, so there will be growth this year.

The situation can be extrapolated to the United States but with the nuance, highlighted the executive, that it is still early to know the consequences of the regional banking crisis last March, although the authorities reacted well and deposit outflows have stabilized.

In this sense, the expert stressed that in the future, there will be a greater convergence between the regulatory requirements of the big banks and the regional banks after that episode that resulted in the bankruptcy of entities such as Silicon Valley Bank (SVB).

The consumer and his interests are the main focus of all the principles enunciated in the document of this agreement. “The fulfillment of the objectives of the energy policy must be in favor of the interests of the final consumers. We support with the same force the actions in favor of the mitigation of climate change and access to competitive prices and conditions”, the document indicates.

The organizations Acie, Abraceel (Brazil), ACE (Mexico), Acce (Colombia), Acen (Chile) and Acemel (Portugal), together with ACIE (Spain), participate in this alliance.
Access to competitive prices by consumers will be achieved through the implementation of a common energy market in the physical coupling areas, with the participation of the different market agents.

This proposal, indicated in a press release by the RFEF, “has the unconditional support of UEFA in a global project that transforms European football in an exceptional situation.” “Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes, top leaders of the RFEF and the FPF, understand that there is nothing better than a World Cup to strongly transmit a message that will serve as a source of inspiration in the future,” he added.

The candidacy has “the full support” of Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, and is intended to “build bridges and project a message of unity, solidarity and generosity on the part of all European football.” “The candidacy strengthens ties with Europe, generating hope and providing reconstruction tools to the Ukrainian people, who have expressed their pride and gratitude for participating in this project,” he stressed.

The Coordinating Commission of the 2030 World Cup, led by Antonio Laranjo, is already working with the participation of Ukraine, which will soon incorporate the members of its delegation. The Ukrainian arrival does not alter the established roadmap, since Spain maintains its eleven venues and Portugal will continue with three.

“The candidacy of Spain, Portugal and Ukraine has the approval of both the Government and the Head of State, and will meet all the deadlines for delivery according to the FIFA order book. We trust that the football family embrace and support this initiative,” declared the RFEF.

Initially, the proposal dictated that the Government propose a “minimum threshold of 5,000 euros on cryptocurrency assets, in order to tax their capital gains.”

This proposal comes directly from the Portuguese tax body, which went through a process of analyzing the new tax framework applicable to digital assets, responding to the request of the local government.

“The Government supports a concerted position on this matter at European level. However, it determined, by order of the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs, dated 2021, that the Tax and Customs Authority must study the framework of cryptoactive instruments in light of international best practices.”

The main idea is to tax profits with commercial operations for cryptocurrencies and their profits, as long as they exceed the threshold of 5,000 euros. It was also under consideration to apply taxes such as the payment of VAT (value added) among others.

The signing of the decree was announced through a statement.

The president waited until the last day, which ended this Sunday, December 5 in accordance with the provisions of the law, to officially dissolve the Parliament of Portugal in order to give the legislative body time to process the largest number of laws that were pending, such as the anti-corruption measures and the law on euthanasia, which was vetoed.

The dissolution of Parliament is a consequence of the rejection of the budget for 2022 presented by the “Socialist Government of António Costa in the Chamber at the end of November, with the votes against his former left-wing partners.”

Give the power back to the people of Portugal

Given this scenario, the president of the country considered it necessary to call elections as a solution to the problem and blockage of the budget, which occurred just in the middle of the term of the legislative power. “It is part of the life of democracy to give the power to the people,” said the President on November 4 when he announced the decision to call early elections.

António Costa, from the socialist party, will run again to be prime minister and maintains the leadership in the polls. However, opinion studies maintain that there will be no absolute majority, therefore the strategy is to negotiate.

Costa came to power as prime minister in 2015 and although his party was not the most voted, he established agreements with the parties of the left, managing to stay in office for 4 years. In 2019 the Socialists managed to win, but “eight deputies of the absolute majority remained and Costa decided to govern alone without agreements, negotiating measure by measure, a strategy that was exhausted two years later.”
