Vatican News has released images of the final preparations for the start of the conclave this Wednesday, May 7, which will result in the election of a new pope.

Once the period of mourning for the death of Pope Francis has ended, the election process will begin in the Sistine Chapel, with the participation of all 133 cardinals authorized to vote.

Preparations for the conclave include everything related to the voting process, such as the tables where the cardinals will be seated and the polling stations where they will cast their votes during the process. Security at the site has also been reinforced in light of the importance of the event.

Regarding the conclave, it is known that “starting Wednesday, there will be four votes per day, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, and after the 33rd or 34th ballot, however, there will be a direct and obligatory runoff between the two cardinals who received the most votes in the last ballot.”

A two-thirds majority will be required in the process. “The two remaining cardinals will not be able to actively participate in the vote. If the votes in favor of a candidate reach two-thirds of the voters, the election of the Pontiff is canonically valid.”
