The proposal launched in March by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to extend the deadline for car manufacturers to meet their annual CO2 reduction target was recently accepted by the EU-27, which set the deadline for 2027.

The decision was agreed upon by ambassadors and endorsed by the European Parliament earlier this month. The amendment, “which will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU, will allow manufacturers’ compliance with the CO2 targets for 2025, 2026, and 2027 to be assessed over the entire three-year period rather than annually.”

It is known that a 15 % reduction target for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions had been set for this year. Regarding the extension of the deadline, Brussels’ position was that it was unnecessary given that the countries in the region were aware of the schedule approved in 2019.

However, the deadline for EU car manufacturers to comply with the pollutant requirements is set for two years from now.
