This intergovernmental forum will serve as a meeting point for representatives of Member States, United Nations entities, and civil society to negotiate conclusions on the theme of “Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, and addressing structural barriers.”

She has signed an alliance with the other political parties to begin her presidential term.

Opposition candidate Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, 71, is a doctor by profession and “has promised to work to make our wealth accessible to all our people.”

Geerlings-Simons belongs to the National Democratic Party. Her running mate, Gregory Rusland, of the Surinamese National Party, will serve as vice president. “Both secured the support of 34 members of the National Assembly, the exact number needed for election in the first round.”

The president-elect, who will take office on July 16, declared: “I will use all my knowledge and strength to make our wealth available to all our people.” She added that she is aware of the responsibility ahead: “an even greater responsibility for being the first woman to hold this position. I don’t need many words. I thank you, and we will get to work.”

As background on Geerlings-Simons’s political career, it is worth mentioning that she served as president of the National Assembly of Suriname between 2010 and 2020. She was the second woman to hold that office, and in 2024 she was elected leader of the NDP, founded by the late former president Desi Bouterse.

The lower house representatives reached this decision even with the support of the Liberals of the FDP recently expelled from the coalition and the Greens, who together with the Social Democrats form a minority government.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, November 12, after the meetings in the Bundestag, although the date has yet to be confirmed by the president of the nation, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The official must dissolve Parliament after the current chancellor, Olaf Scholz, “submits to a vote of confidence foreseeably on December 16, which he will lose due to being in the minority,” according to some local media.

Scholz wanted to submit to the vote of confidence on January 15, and had proposed that the elections be held at the end of March 2025, although he gave in to the advance of the date.

“Once the date of the vote of confidence is called, the deputies will in principle have 48 hours to vote. Steinmeier will then have a maximum of 21 days to dissolve parliament, a step which, once done, will trigger a 60-day period for holding elections.”

The parliamentarians voted in favor of the elections on 23 February after the coalition between the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals broke up.

“The electoral advance is part of a series of announcements that the Peruvian president makes about changes in the government during her annual message to the nation,” they indicated, clarifying that the call for general elections will be made in April of next year.

“Thus, Peru will revitalize its institutions and its democracy, through the sovereign act of citizens to elect their authorities,” said Boluarte.

The president, who faces accusations of corruption and abuse of authority, has denied any connection with these issues and has asked the people to “monitor and report any irregular events immediately so that the authorities take drastic action.”

Boluarte will seek to strengthen the economy of Peru, the third-largest producer of copper in the world, “which for years was one of the best performers in South America,” but contracted 0.6% last year due to the climate phenomenon of “El Niño, lower investment private sector and social protests that stopped production.”

Milei asked for the resignation of the former Infrastructure minister, the civil engineer Guillermo Ferraro, and decided that the portfolio that deals with public works, housing, communications and transport policies becomes a Secretariat within the Ministry of Economy.

Economy already had the secretariats of Finance, Treasury, Energy, Commerce, Treasury, Legal and Administrative, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; Economic Policy; Mining; Industry and Productive Development, some of which had been ministries in the previous Government, that of the Peronist Alberto Fernández (2019-2023).

Although he defends the independence of the Central Bank, the president of the monetary entity is Santiago Bausili, a partner of Caputo in his private consultancy Anker Latin America and who had replaced him as Finance secretary in the administration of Mauricio Macri (2015-2019).

Caputo, a 58-year-old economist – who had been Finance minister of the Macri government, before presiding over the Central Bank in the final stage of the center-right’s term – has the challenge of ordering an economy with strong macroeconomic imbalances.

By assuming this ‘superministry’, the head of the Treasury Palace closes a week of high profile for having defended the increase in taxes and the change in the formula for updating pensions proposed in the ‘omnibus law’ that Milei sent to Congress.

However, these measures along with others that increased income and were part of the fiscal package included in the ‘omnibus law’ were withdrawn from the project.

Ecuador, a country affected by drug trafficking violence, saw Noboa win the runoff with 52 % support, defeating Luisa González, who obtained 48 % of the votes and was supported by former socialist president Rafael Correa (2007-2017). ).

Noboa’s victory was greeted with enthusiasm by Ecuadorians, who celebrated in the streets of Quito with fireworks and car horns. This election represents one of the biggest setbacks for the Correísta movement, which has lost for the second consecutive time in a presidential election after years of popularity.

“Tomorrow we begin to work for this new Ecuador, to rebuild a country that has been seriously hit by violence, corruption and hatred,” declared the president-elect from his residence in Olón, located in the southwest of the country.

Despite being a newcomer to politics until a few months ago, Noboa promised to strive to “restore peace” to the country.

Luisa González accepted his defeat and congratulated the new president, who won the support of right-wing forces, despite defining himself as center-left.

Although election day passed without serious incidents, both Noboa and González voted wearing bulletproof vests and were surrounded by armed guards. The main concern of both candidates and the population in general is to end the growing violence in Ecuador, a country of 16.9 million inhabitants.

In recent years, Ecuador has become a center of operations for drug cartels with international connections, resulting in a reign of terror and thousands of fatalities.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) confirmed Noboa’s victory and reported a participation of 82.33 % of the 13.4 million Ecuadorians called to vote in this mandatory election.

To guarantee security, approximately 100,000 military and police were deployed throughout the country during the electoral process.

Milei was a true stranger to most in the past presidential elections of 2019, despite all the histrionic effort she put into television programs, from where she has been defending her libertarian theses to get Argentina out of its serious economic crisis, not only but also to the entire ruling class that has governed the country.

“It is not possible to change with the same as always,” Milei repeated to his people after learning of his victory in these primaries, whose results now and unexpectedly place him as a favorite for the October elections.

“We are facing the end of the caste model, based on that atrocity that where there is a need a right is born, but they forget that someone has to pay for it,” defended who considers social justice an “aberration” and defends the dollarization of the economy to get out of the deep inflation that is strangling the country.

Since December 2021 he has been a deputy, but it was long before that he began to gain a foothold in that political class that he says he hates. For the past decade he has been a recognizable face on television, where his angry way of debating and defending his views has made him a media draw.

His formula to reach a position within that political class that he says he hates is far from being novel, given that examples have been seen in other countries of candidates who are similar to him, such as Donald Trump in the United States and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil.
