The recent decision by US President Donald Trump to reduce work permits for migrants to 18 months, down from the previous five-year duration, also affects asylum seekers, beneficiaries of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), refugees, migrants under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and other humanitarian categories.

The measure, taken on December 4, is part of an update to the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) program by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and applies to both renewals and new applications.

Trump seeks to strengthen security in the country by conducting more frequent reviews of immigrants’ eligibility.

The federal agency has indicated that “applicants should submit their renewals well in advance to avoid interruptions in employment authorization, although permits issued before December 4 will remain valid until their expiration.”

Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Mexico on Monday, October 3, during a press conference in Lima.

The official indicated that the measure is a response to the political asylum granted to former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, allegedly involved in the failed coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo in December 2022.

Peru’s official statement reads: “The unacceptable position taken by Mexico since December 2022 has remained unchanged, despite the Peruvian government’s repeated demands for respect for its sovereignty and the principle of non-intervention in its internal affairs.”

They consider this an “unfriendly” act, in addition to various forms of “unacceptable interference by the Mexican government in Peru.”
