YouTube reported that starting October 25, 2023, its YouTube Premium Lite subscription plan, which allowed you to watch videos without advertising in some European countries, will no longer be available to users.

The video platform presented the YouTube Premium Lite option in 2021 as a cheaper subscription than YouTube Premium, which allowed you to view content without interruption from ads. However, this plan was advertised at a lower cost because it did not include features such as downloading for offline listening or background playback.

Thus, YouTube Premium Lite was launched with a price of 6.99 euros per month in some European countries such as Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.

Now, the company has reported that users will no longer have access to this subscription plan after October 25, 2023, as YouTube has notified through an email sent to subscribers, to which The Verge.

In this framework, users who had the Premium Lite version must opt for a subscription to the Premium plan, which costs 11.99 euros per month, or use the free version of YouTube with ads.

However, in said email YouTube has explained that they continue working on “different versions of Premium Lite” in which they are incorporating comments from users, creators and partners, to improve the experience.

Additionally, YouTube also offered subscribers of the Premium Lite version a one-month free trial for YouTube Premium.

Leading cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase has taken a significant step by quietly introducing a cryptocurrency lending service aimed at institutional investors in the United States. This move is reportedly aimed at capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the cryptocurrency lending market.

Under the name of Coinbase Prime, the new cryptocurrency lending platform offers an institutional-grade solution for investors in the United States. Coinbase Prime, a full-service brokerage platform, enables institutions to trade and safeguard their assets.

“With this service, institutions can choose to lend digital assets to Coinbase under standardized terms in a product that meets the Regulation D exemption”, the firm said in its statement.

According to documents filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), since its launch on August 28, Coinbase clients have already invested $57 million in this lending program, attracting five investors as of 1 of September.

This new Coinbase cryptocurrency lending product follows the suspension of issuance of new loans on Coinbase Borrow in May 2023. This program was designed to allow users to borrow up to 1 million using Bitcoin as collateral.

Importantly, this news comes several months after the US SEC accused Coinbase of allegedly offering and selling unregistered securities in connection with its cryptocurrency staking services, which allow users to earn returns by giving away their cryptocurrencies to the platform. Coinbase defended itself by arguing that it did not share the view that its staking services constitute securities.

The dispute led to the suspension of Coinbase’s staking program in four states: California, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Wisconsin, while legal proceedings continued.

This move by Coinbase comes at a time when the cryptocurrency lending industry is still reeling from last year’s crisis, which saw major companies like BlockFi, Celsius, and Genesis Global file for bankruptcy due to illiquidity caused by the bear market of 2022. Observers of the crypto space consider it critical that the cryptocurrency lending industry learns lessons from these crashes and addresses challenges related to short-term assets and liabilities.

Thailand has decided to require an injunction to shut down Facebook if it fails to effectively address misleading investment ads and cryptocurrency scams on its platform.

On Aug. 21, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) reported that more than 200,000 people were notably misled by Facebook ads promoting cryptocurrency scams, investments in fictitious companies, and fake government entities, such as the Stock Exchange Commission and Values.

Among the most common schemes used by scammers were cryptocurrency investment and business fraud, according to MDES. Some ads apparently used images of famous personalities and well-known financial figures, offering promises of up to 30 % daily profit, with the purpose of luring people into scams.

Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, the MDES minister, said that the ministry had held talks with the Meta platform and had sent a letter to it in this regard, however, he stated that it does not exercise control over advertisers.

The Ministry is amassing evidence of the fraudulent advertisements, which, according to his statement, number a considerable 5,300. Later this month, he is set to formally petition the court to shut down Facebook within seven days.

The Ministry alerted about the modus operandi of these scams, emphasizing that consumers must be careful when faced with promises of high and guaranteed returns, as well as with advertisements that use images of famous people.

The Venezuelan Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC in Spanish) announced the arrest of a group of criminals who operated within the state of Monagas and were dedicated to stealing cryptocurrencies from retired workers of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).

Douglas Rico, national director of the CICPC, reported through his Instagram network that three citizens who made up the gang “Los Crackers de Oriente” and various equipment used in criminal operations were captured.

The members of the gang frequently entered the “accounts of retired PDVSA workers to steal the cryptocurrencies that the victims had in the Patria application, a platform that works as a wallet for the national crypto asset El Petro.”

Sophisticated method to get the passwords

A PDVSA worker reported the disappearance of his funds from the Patria wallet and the authorities of the CICPC Computer Crimes Division carried out the corresponding investigations, detecting that the fraudsters obtained the private keys of the users and entered the accounts of the homeland platform.

Once they managed to enter, they transferred the cryptocurrencies by falsifying the identity documents, later, the hackers exchanged the cryptoactives for bolivars that they transferred to their personal bank accounts.

The director of the institution did not reveal how the cybercriminals managed to access the private keys of those affected.
